longshanks
@Martian Hale I've been giving a lot of thought to your invitation and your support on here and I'm feeling guilty . . . . . So when it comes time for its MOT I'll be only too pleased to assist with the Vasco In the meantime I've been having a go at the steering wheel ( as some of you are insisting the the bridge should be open ) I use Aber etch wheels as the basis for this The base wheel set out I forgot to take some pics but this will give you an idea, 0.2mm spokes laid out and held with tape. Tiny blobs of solder on the joint areas. I usually use solder paint but mine was rock solid. So I used solder paste well thinned with flux. The top wheel placed in position and then the whole zap with a small blow torch, just a second or two. Bit clearer Handles cut to length using 0.75mm card to ensure all the same length Et voila To give you an idea of size and propped in position Thanks for stopping by Kev PS For those that don't know the Vasco is a jet ski 😉 15

Courageous
Now that wheel has put mine to shame. My only saving grace is that I'm fortunate that I have an enclosed wheelhouse Stuart
longshanks
12 hours ago, JohnWS said: what did you use to make the funnel? Base was Aluminium, the base was made up from a couple of plastic tubes. The top of the base was formed by turning the tube using a batter screwdriver and a scalpel blade/sandpaper. The big advantage of the driver is the slow speed, typically around 200 rpm. Use a model drill at 20,000 rpm and all you're to do is melt the plastic Kev 2

On reflection I think your right, 'steering wheel' sounds a bit Naf You've got me thinking about terminology instead of building. I'm not sure about helm. How about ship's wheel of more correctly boat's wheel. What does the jury think? Thanks for all your support Kev PS or perhaps just ' the wheely ' as suggested
ArnoldAmbrose
Gidday Kev, superb job on that steering thingy. As far as terminology goes I think both are correct. The actual object you have built is 'the wheel' but 'the helm' I think applies to the overall task/position. When steering the vessel I was called the helmsman (sorry ladies, no offence meant but it was male dominated back then), and told to 'take the helm'. But it was the 'wheel' I hung onto (particularly in heavy weather!). But the term 'wheel house' can also apply to the compartment the wheel is mounted in. Confusing? Maybe I could have explained it better. I understand that world wide there might be variations of this but that was my experience anyway. And back to the model, your call obviously but it would be a shame to hide the wheel/helm/steering thingy out of sight within an enclosed bridge/wheelhouse. But then that will create more work for you - the other necessities such as compass, voice pipes, coffee mugs etc Regards, Jeff. Courageous
I'm with Jeff; 'helm' is the position/ task, the wheel, tiller or stick is what you use. Will you be weathering the TID then Kev? Stuart
