longshanks
Fender Puddings Been playing with ideas as to how to portray . . . . This seems to work. Using Green Stuff epoxy putty I roughed out a fore and aft sausage Once dry the sausages were sanded to shape. For someone used to Milliput it's strange how soft and flexible the Green Stuff is When I'd got the shape sorted I wound 0.25mm thread around Et voila The puddings have yet to be shaped in properly and secured but good enough for government work. Need some washes/highlights and ragging but good enough for proof of concept Thanks for looking in Kev

longshanks
To the best of my knowledge tugs of this period mainly used old rope bundled up and held in shape with further rope binding or net. They were tied to the bulwarks at the ends and perhaps centre. The ropes were tied off on ring bolts or cleats welded to either the inside or outside of the bulwarks. Murdo
I have a wee scratchbuild project coming up, I'm absolutely pooing myself over it as I've only "dabbled" in scratchbuilding ships (or anything) a little bit in the past. I will no doubt be looking for lots of advice and as much copying and plagiarism as possible as it will be something along the lines of what you're doing here but a wee bit bigger, probably 1:144. Where do you buy your styrene sheet from? What thicknesses do you use?

I also have a tug build here but I've other stuff in front of it at the mo. You'll be quite surprised on how therapeutic it is and their is a good crowd on here to guide you through. As for plastic supplies, I use my LMS but others will know cheaper places. Thicknesses, all sorts, depends on what you're doing. Stuart
longshanks
4 hours ago, Murdo said: I'm absolutely pooing myself over it Why? If you muck the part up you just make another one. I'm currently trying to make a tow hook, lost count of the failures but I'm making progress. It's all part of the fun of scratch building. With scratch building sit back look at the part and see how you can break it down into components. If you try and it didn't work, why didn't work. What can you do different. As Stuart said you'll get plenty of help if you ask. No such thing as a stupid question. If you're embarrassed you can always PM. As said above the sizes you're looking at LHS is good I've used https://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/acatalog/plasticard-sheet.html for large sheets http://www.shgmodels.com/acatalog/ Page 31. Thickness I would suggest a good start would be 0.25, 0.38, 0.5, 0.75 & 1mm. The other way to look at card thickness is in relation to scale i.e. @1/144 0.1 = 14.4mm @1:1 .25 = 36mm @1:1 .38 = 55mm @1:1 etc If you can find it grab some 0.1mm. Anyone out there know where its available at the moment?? Welcome to the mad house Kev Edited July 5, 2019 by longshanks

longshanks
Thanks for that Richard, I've now been able to find it by looking for 0.005". This equals 0.13mm., I think I can live with that 😉 Kev
longshanks
Well I'm still struggling with the quick release tow hook In the mean time I've managed to form the tow bows (not fixed yet) and stop post at the rear of the boiler casing Here you can see the formers I used to make the bows The holes on the left of the card are for the main part of the hook, give you an idea of how many attempts so far . . . 1/32 scale next I think . . . .
