neil5208
So for this years first WIP I wanted something smaller than the B17 I've just finished and strangely ended up with 4 Japanese aircraft. First was the Airfix B5N2 Kate, followed by 2 Airfix Zeros from Aldi for £5 each and finally the Hasegawa KI61 Tony I picked up second hand for £8!. I have picked up Eduard seat belts for the Zeros along with new decals, a set of ski's, interior etch and decals for the Tony as the original decals look quite poor and the Kate has the Eduard etch set but will use the kit decals as they are good. Resin ski's and Rising Sun decals look good. neil5208
Small update, fitted some of the cockpit etch and sprayed olive drab. It would have more but I'm trying to finish off a P51 Red Tail and a Curtis Hawk before I get stuck in proper. The bare cockpit as supplied by Hasegawa IMGA0685 by neil Connor, on Flickr And with a bit of etch, some more small bits to go in once dry. neil5208
Some more cockpit work last night, seat, belts and control boxes painted, cockpit secured to one fuselage half. Instrument panel is next and then the fuselage can come together, earlier dry fit looks goods. IMGA0691 by neil Connor, on Flickr Eduards etch is going in as normal i.e everything must be checked before gluing in place. The radio/control box on the port side is mounted higher than eduard instruct or the cockpit floor wont fit in. neil5208
Fuselage is together and filled the seam, will probably have to re scribe most of the panel lines as they a very light in places. May add the gun breeches before the canopy goes on. Tail sprayed red for sqn marking to be masked off. neil5208
Wings are on but the join will need work, I added the breeches of the fuselage guns using a couple of M2 HMG's left over from a B17. Just need the gun sight and the canopy can go on. Started the 2 Zero's, cockpits 90% done just the Eduard IJN seat belts to finish before going into the fuselages. neil5208
The Tony has had its wing root filed and rear tail planes fitted, the Zero's cockpits are done and the fuselage and wings are on! These Airfix Zero's build up fast and so far no filler required. neil5208
Been a busy week so time at bench has been curtailed, but I got the Tony canopy masked and sprayed interior colour and started on the Zero's masking. Should have a few hours to myself tomorrow so hopefully have some colour on both by end of the day. IMGA0711 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0712 by neil Connor, on Flickr Any hopes of starting the Kate next week have evaporated.
DennisTheBear
Would have been more fun if you had called this WIP 'Hillybilly dance: 2 Zekes, a Kate, and a Tony'.😎 Nice work so far! I'll look in occassionally if you don't mind.😀 DennisTheBear
neil5208
First of the Zero's has had Humbrol Maskol on the canopy (first time I've tried using) and the Tony has also been sprayed Tamiya XF16 Aluminium. IMGA0714 by neil Connor, on Flickr The Tony will be an non weathered aircraft, I have only been able to find two pictures of aircraft on ski's, one black and white photo in plain green? and an oil painting of the NMF/green spot that is common on Tony's https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjP45W3obHgAhWXAmMBHfUKDFkQjRx6BAgBEAU&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.warrelics.eu%2Fforum%2Faircraft%2Fwhat-hack-painting-ki-61-hien-tony-skids-378461%2F&psig=AOvVaw1bPUAJvy-Abp_FBgV8PE-1&ust=1549891365359798 The Zero will be heavily chipped/weathered as the aircraft captured by the US force on Saipan Island were in poor condition both mechanicayl and cosmeticly IMGA0715 by neil Connor, on Flickr Whilst at Hobbycraft picking up the maskol I spotted an Italeri SR71 Blackbird for a £10, couldn't leave it there could I? neil5208
Masked up and sprayed IJN Field Grey, will leave overnight and mask of the yellow leading edges and the black anti glare panel. RadMax8
Your builds are looking very nice! Love the extra detail you added into the Tony cockpit... really makes a huge difference! I’d be interested to hear the story about the skis. What theater was that designed for? My one nitpick is that Tamiya XF-16 is a very granular paint in my chosen scale (1/48), so I can imagine it’s much more so in 1/72. But if that’s what you’ve got access to, or what you feel most comfortable using, then it’s the proper paint for the job. Thanks for sharing! neil5208
The Tony's last bit of paint is on, black anti glare panel and yellow leading edges were masked up and sprayed. Ski's have been painted but only dry fit. The fuel tanks need painting and fitting before clear coat can go on. IMGA0719 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0718 by neil Connor, on Flickr Zeros currently on hold until I can get the right light grey for the undersides, hopefully by end of the week.
neil5208
I've had the morning off so made so more progress on the Tony. Wooden fuel tanks painted and on, the Rising Sun decals went on really well but the kit decals being so old were very poor, only managed to save 4 of them. Ski's are on, just need the cut down doors fitting. IMGA0720 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0721 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0722 by neil Connor, on Flickr Now this one is done I can make a start on the Kate.

neil5208
I have started the Kate as I have been unable to get any Tamiya XF21 for the Zero's yet. I will be using Marco1965's excellent build he did last year as a guide but I will do a more weathered aircraft than he did. Also decided that I would make this a more evolved build than the Tony or Zero so the Wing will be folded and I have the Eduard interior etch set. So the outer wings have been cut off and assembled, remembered to drill the 2 small holes for the wing fold stays but the kit instructions don't list the correct colour for them so if anyone knows this please let me know. Also drilled out the lightning hole in the cockpit floor, may not be visible with the wings folded but simple enough, the left fuselage has had the etch applied to the rear gunners spare ammo tins. Once the wife has finished her sewing I will spray the cockpit and start applying the coloured etch. IMGA0723 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0724 by neil Connor, on Flickr Wing fold end plates, I considered the CMK resin parts but in this scale it wouldn't make much difference. neil5208
Been a bit busy so work done until today, got some colour on the Kates cockpit and made a start on the etch. Nicest set from Eduard yet. IMGA0734 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0735 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0736 by neil Connor, on Flickr Also got some paint on the first of the Zero's, I have to admit I'm not sure about the colours on the upper surface. I used IA Grey and olive drab but they look to stark together so will probably change when I spray the second Zero. I will probably go for softer edges rather than the hard edges on this one IMGA0737 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0738 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0739 by neil Connor, on Flickr

neil5208
As I wasn't happy with the Zero's paint yesterday I mixed some Tamiya Nato Green and IA Grey until I got close to the H Model decal instruction indicated colour and sprayed both Zero's this afternoon. Also sprayed the engine cowls, first is the standard black and the second a dark plum red. IMGA0740 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0741 by neil Connor, on Flickr Much happier with the primary green, will go much better with the darker green.
neil5208
Been off sick with the flu for the last three days but unable to do any modelling because of it. Managed to some spraying today at least on the two Zero's, aircraft E-110 still need the wing leading edges and some whit band on wings and fuselage while aircraft 8-07 just need the wing edges before it will be ready for decals. neil5208
Been a while since I have updated this WIP, usaul things, work and wife taking up the time. But I have completed the first Zero and the decal are on the second Zero, I haven't made any progress on the Kate unfortunately but hope to do so soon. Decals are on the second Zero, compared to the Allied forces and German the Japanese aircraft had little in the way of stencils which makes the process a quick one. IMGA0757 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0756 by neil Connor, on Flickr I think the decals by H Models conform well even without decal solution and have no register issues.
