Scroggs Last Laugh, 1/72 scratchbuilt

Recommended Posts

A build from 12 years ago:

This design was patented in 1917, and built in 1929.

Now there you have an idea: make a super-sized dart-like paper airplane, bolt-on a Curtiss OX-5 engine and climb on board. Crazy? Well, in 1930 Mr. Scroggs, a tailor, test flew such thing at a height of 10 feet!

The way he christened the machine, “The Last Laugh”, surely says something about the lesson he taught to the incredulous bystanders.

For the curious here is a link to a movie of it:

Hey, I just looked at it and knew I was in love.

I can still hear Scroggs' laughter!

I bet it would do a torque roll better than a Pitts special.  Something about natural selection...

I'm still marveling at the thought of the turbulence that almost full span radiator would cause. The lack of forwards vision must be deliberate, so as not to allow the pilot to see what he was about to hit.

Again an incredible model.

Another little beauty Moa.

What an amazing aircraft and what a nutter! Could have done with a flatter field! I wonder if anyone tried to steal the patent!?

Cheers
