Very nice James. I really like that colour scheme. I have one of these to do, might have to crack on with it in the Specialists GB.

Go for it, it’s a great kit. Only bad fit is the nose section but that’s nothing a bit of sanding can’t sort out. The only other thing this kit needs is spacer to spread the fuselage towards the back of the wing roots.

Hi Everyone

Decals are on. It took most of last week but they're on and very nice they are too.

Sorry this ones a bit fuzzy. Its also had a Mig panel line wash, stone grey for the most part and blue/black around the cockpit and nose panels. I fancied a change from the usual dark dirts and burnt umbers etc as these aircraft look as though they were well cared for in photos.

Next up is a flat coat and some dark grey filters.

Thanks for looking.

Looking very nice James. Were these machines matt finished or polished for speed?

Hi Col

Polished I think going on a couple of pictures I’ve found of them in hangers.

Looking very nice indeed! Well played.

Any advice re masking for the blue on the upper surfaces of the engine pod areas? I have this in the stash and intend to do it in the same scheme as yours.

Yes I bought a Maketar canopy survival masking set from the big H a while back which had some elliptical shapes on it that were pretty close. Lucky as I didn't fancy that one by eye with strips of Tamiya tape.

Any updates re the dark grey filter?

Yep, here it is all done.

Basically i ended up using oil dots. The colours were black, paynes grey and raw umber. I've never tried it before so probably haven't the technique much justice. pics below.

Not sure if you can make it out in this picture but the tail planes have a very subtle streaking on them and ever so slightly mottled and the colour has very subtly changed. Pics are not great, photography is not my strong point.

And the main plane. I got it a bit heavy on this area.

And an over all shot. I really wish that i had sanded and re scribed the ailerons and elevators and it's a bit 1970's riveting monster on these parts.

Anyway just the uc and a coat of varnish and this one finished.

Thanks

It certainly seems to have pulled it all together. Very nice.
How exactly did you apply the filter? - please excuse my ignorance, I am not too familiar with the terms.

No worries. I was ignorant to it as well until last weekend.

I put the oils that I wanted to use onto a scrap of cardboard for 10 minutes to let the oil leech out a bit. I then put a few very small dots onto an area of the model. It's surprising how little you need.

Then dip a brush into some enamel thinners and wipe of all of said thinners until it looks dry. You need a flat wide brush.

Now Drag the brush over the dots if oil paint in the direction of the air flow. Now clean and dry the brush. Repeat again until you have the effect that you desire.

The trick is to not use the brush to wet with the thinners as it will just drag all of the paint off.

I also did did all of this onto a Matt surface so that the oils kind of grip a bit as I think a gloss surface would be to slippery.

Have a look around on the web as there are some good tutorials on this. Flory Models might be a good place to start.

Hi all

I'm calling this one done a day late!

The only extras in the end were a set of Brassin wheels. Also the eagle eyed among you may spot a blob of blue tac under the nose wheel. It's a b****y tail sitter! Oh well you live and learn.

A nice kit and an enjoyable build which I think builds up into an impressive model.. Thanks to everyone for their input.

Nice result :goodjob: Perhaps a strategicaly placed set of wheel chocks will help tame that tail-sitting tendency?

Hi everyone

Thanks for the kind comments.

As it's a nice sunny afternoon here i managed to get some outside shots to replace those earlier terrible half dark ones.

Thanks again for looking.
