F-84G Thunderjet - Yugoslav Air Force- Batajnica Airbase 1954 1/48 - finished!

Recommended Posts

not Warsaw Pakt, nor NATO, but still in here!

, thanks to the mods and the rules, I am able to do a Thunderjet of the Yugoslavian Air Force within this GB!

actually a kit and decals I sourced about 2 years ago, when during one of my out of the normal ways of thinking I discovered that Yugoslavia started of with quite interesting assortment of armament after WWII, although a Socialist country, it was throughout its existence more or less independent and sourced arms or licences for them all over the world..... a lot of effort was also put into their own industry and quite some respectable planes and capability came from that!

for those interested, here some links:

https://acesflyinghigh.wordpress.com/2016/01/16/yugoslav-air-force-combat-aircraft-1953-to-1979-the-jet-age-i-us-soviet-aircraft/

http://yumodelclub.tripod.com/history_of_yugoslav_aviation/thunderjet_f__84_g.htm

Yugoslavian Air Force operated 231 Republic (R)F-84G from June 1953 until July 1974, first as fighters in aluminium/ natural metal, sometimes still with the US insignia, sometimes with Arctic high viz colors! in the late 50ies already they were seconded to fighter bomber duties because newer F-86E arrived from England (see also @Giorgio N 's build of an Italian example in this same GB!...) and started to receive camoflage

so, my original intent was to build a camoflaged example... but that would strech my knowledge a bit in order to ascertain it was operated like this already in the late 50ies.. can sombody help out here with individual examples? I'd prefer photos....!

if not in time, I will happily do a aluminium one :)

the 2 decal sets from Lift Here fortunately provide options for both :) (Lift Here Decals)

so, next issue, the kit, is slightly, really slightly only started I guess common sense wold say below 25%  easily

  • Revell- Monogram ProModeller Edition F-84G Thunderjet 1/48
  • LiftHere Decals US-Jets in Yugoslavian Service Part 2& 3

Batajnica Airbase 1954

xwawPcY.jpg

on the left the later camoflaged version, on the right the unpainted one, also with nose art ;)

the kit does not look too complicated, i also assume that I do not have to modify anything unforeseen! so there might remain time in this GB to to more stuff ;) wait and see!

thanks already fro your interest, hosts for hosting and please come up with input and suggestions!

cheers,

Werner

Very interesting subject !

he history of Yugoslavia's military after WW2 is much more varied than many thinks and I know many who were surprised when they found that several US types served in that country. I remember that during a visit in the early '80s at some point the local police stopped the traffic to let some tanks pass. I was expecting Soviet built types but they were Shermans ! After they passed we continued through the road and I saw other Shermans and a number of US tank destroyers moving off road.

Not Warsaw Pact, nor NATO, but still part of the story :) Welcome to the GB Werner with an interesting subject.Sounds as if you've quite a range of potential colourschemes to pick from for this one.

They not only used Shermans but also M-10 Hellcats and M-36 Jacksons, in fact some of their Shermans (and heavily disguised T-34/85's) are film stars as they were used in Kelly's Heroes which was filmed in Yugoslavia, awesome film!

Werner,

Good choice of subject and kit.  Watch the fit of those fuselage inserts.

Interesting to see some squadron markings, I always thought the Yugoslav aircraft were pretty plain but it shows just how wrong you can be.  As Giorgio rightly points out, we in the west know little about this period of Yugoslav history.

I shall be following this thread with interest.

thanks everybody!

had a start this weekend... not much to show, but at least something...

mounted and painted the cockpit part, the sat will be resin, no idea where it is from! (I bought this kit in the state above some years ago..., just checking it now, hope it is complete for my needs here!)

I prepainted the gear wells in ~ zinc chromate yellow , th eair intake in  aluminium

CFiA4Ih.jpg

above on the left (i.e. port ;) wing,) the flap mechanism can be seen ! will be flaps down here I assume!

in addition, I already mounted the cockpit (rel. good fit :))

QyqOUJd.jpg

and added some nose weight as per the detailed and sold school text based instructions! I am not used to actually READ them! ;)

weight should be sufficient in order not to produce a tailsitter! although Monogram even provides a plastic rod to be installed afterwards just in case ..... ;)

spent the evening masking the canopy...

AliX78U.jpg

just did not fell like spending ~ 10€$ on a mask set incl shipping ... probably should have though ;)

I don't know Werner, you seem to have done a good job to me.

Don't forget, the reinforcing in the canopy is natural fibreglass strips, the same colour shows up on the inside as on the outside unlike the frame itself which is either interior green or black on the inside (I can't recall which without checking my references) and whatever the exterior colour is depending on which scheme you choose.

would they be some kind of off-white for my natural metal scheme? thanks!

I think so, it's what it looks like in the b&w photos.

got mail from Belgrade today! Wolf Heritage Decals enormous sheet for Yugoslav Air Force F-84G Thunderjets arrived today!!

Thanks a lot @Murmillo!!!

guess I need at least 2 more kits very very soon!...

is the Tamiya one actually equally good? who knows?

so now I am in the dilemma on what scheme to choose... :partytime:

although it seems natural metal is the way to go, still over 10 individual planes possible! with Red (Arctic Red... ??) tail, tanks and ailerons? form Batajnica, Skopje, Zadar airbases....

Decals are printed by Begemot by the way! :) quality looks excellent!

That's a comprehensive set of decals! While the 'Arctic' scheme is my personal favourite there's certainly plenty other cool options in there :speak_cool:
