ProfSparks Posted January 13, 2019 Share Posted January 13, 2019 Hi All Here's an 'After Hours' project that I'm embarking on with the view of;- a) being a filler in for when other projects are drying/setting/etc b) seeing if I can get a comparable White to NATO Black c) building it just because it's from Fernando Poo island It shouldn't trouble the accurists amongst you, but that's not the point. I suspect the kit was brought through by Noah judging by the water damage It's drying from a soapy bath to remove the flood residue. Anyhoo, there's something oddly comforting about a matchbox kit, like worn out shoes that you still wear, or an LP you still play even though it's covered in scratches. Ok, so I painted it The glazing has no surrounding locating flange, so i guess they just fit flush? ProfSparks Posted February 15, 2019 Author Share Posted February 15, 2019 Hi All I tried in a window, and it just pushes in flush from the outside, so I figure I'll leave them out until it's painted. I ran a strip of tape along the inside to stop the spray getting in, hopefully it should just pull out again,,, It's all buttoned up for the night, as am I I had a window recount and only came up with seven, so I suspect a bodge is in the offing. It does windows like that quite neatly and much easier than trying to make a replacement out of clear sheet. There are other similar products I think. A product called 'Formula 560,' now disributed by Zap, is a similar product that has become my go-to for such uses. I slightly prefer it to Krystal-Kleer because it's a bit thicker...which makes it easier to bridge gaps, and keeps it from running off quite as easily. Dries just as clear with less shrinkage. Thanks thorfinn, if I can't get the Klear to work I'll get some 560. Thso, after much sanding, the body was ready for some engine pods They set quite well, so on with the wings I'd notices they looked pretty flat so that's what I went for Turns out they're mostly ok! Or I could cut off the side windows from the screen, fit fill and paint it all, then remove the internal masking through the side gaps and use this Klear to make side windows like the fuselage portholes? I've opened a few recently, on DC3 with a pilot leaning out, etc. Gives a bit of life, or animation, to the model. A Matchbox kit is a joy forever!! In the mean time, I've been messing around with paint. Tamiya X-1 Black, but I now think I should have used a NATO black as I'm after the corresponding white Anyhoo, taped And after several rounds of various light grey lightened with white, veering towards white darkened with light grey I discovered it was just as difficult to photograph scale white as it was to mix it. Regardless, this is where I ended up Looks white until something white is beside it, then it still looks light grey. I can't tell if it's covered with the final mix of white with a drop of light grey, or just a patchy blend of all the previous shades as I couldn't really tell where I was spraying A conundrum and no mistake. But onward. I'll get the stickers on, give it a rub down with a Florry wash and try to remove the internal tape without consigning it to the bin. Then there's the Kristal Klear to experiment with. (all three of them) The carrier film is quite firm yet quite fragile, and also quite resistant to solutions. It's had the Micro Sol, the Daco Strong and the stern glare, but remains unmoved. It's going to get the Silent Treatment for a couple of days while I'm away, let's see if that works. But, as every silver lining must have a cloud, they were just as resilient on application. Anyhoo, a bit of detail painting with Grey Flory Wash Taking it off with some kitchen roll Leaves It looks like the Flory is a residue effect like mud or dust or clay not panel lines, Lesson 1. I put some Sand on the wheels And it looked like dried mud, so that's what it's for. Now onto the main event, removing the internal window masking... And it's out! Next Experiment is with the Klear Gloopy and thick, managed to cover the windows and windscreen sides So there it is It's not big or clever, but has served its' purpose as a test of getting close to a NATO white, and an added bonus of Kristal Klear introduction. It's still slightly foggy where it was thick Hopefully this will clear eventually. But if not, then I'll know not to put so much on next time.
