1/72 AirKits Chetverikov MDR-6 COMPLETE

Recommended Posts

I was planning to take part in this GB with a different model, opened the topic and even cut some parts but the sad news of premature demise of Alexander N. Kozyrev - the Patriarch of Russian garage kitmakers and the man behind Kajuk and AirKits marques has changed the plans. I'm going to build Chetverikov Che-2 / MDR-6 - long sea reconnaissance aircraft that was widely used during WW2 as a tribute to this extraordinary modeller and true gentleman

I'm going to give this project a priority

Hi Alexey

Very sad news, I'm sure you will do him proud when you complete this very fine looking kit.

I love the idea behind the box, just ticking the box to tell you which one is inside !

cheers Pat

Most parts are cleaned from flush and primed.  Che-2 is one of Alexander's early resin kits so some work is needed here. Damn, I should not take pictures with this phone any more, it just does not focus properly.

Problem?

563691-15048-46.jpg

Not at all, just put the tail for 10 seconds in boiled water and ...

563689-15048-58.jpg

One of the seats just jumped somewhere. So I cast a copy

Interiour. Not much to be seen. There is no pictures/plans of actual layout of Che-2 cockpit and/or any known pictures so it is pretty much fictional

563685-15048-43.jpg

Tried vacformed canopy on. There seems to be a gap between the windscreen and dashboard, need to thing what should I do about it

563694-15048-17.jpg

Gap. Scary?

563682-15048-38.jpg

(after 15 minutes) well, not too much

563683-15048-92.jpg

(another 25 minutes and a thick layer of brush applied Mr. Surfacer 500) not at all

Fitted vacformed canopy

565941-15048-45.jpg

Pre-masking to feel the seams

565942-15048-66.jpg

While endless loop of fill-sand-prime on body and wings gave a coat of steel to the engines

565943-15048-16.jpg

And cut the turrets. Decided to make framing with self adhesive foil, sanded it a bit to make it matte

565944-15048-19.jpg

565945-15048-21.jpg

More or less happy with body seams, removed temporary masks, replaced with "real" ones

565947-15048-12.jpg

Hatches - foil rules

565948-15048-20.jpg

565949-15048-77.jpg

Coat of Halford's Aluminium to enter another never ending sanding loop

565950-15048-17.jpg

565951-15048-11.jpg

When I sprayed engine cowlings with aluminium riveting revealed that was not visible on bare resin. Decided to rived the cowlings and ... could not stop until the whole plane is riveted

565953-15048-53.jpg

Wings are not glued yet, just fitted with metal struts

This week was pretty much "apply aluminium" - "sand" - "paint again". Very crotchety and unforgiving finish

Guns look like resin copies of MiniWorld, as such are very fragile. I added some leftover gun sights etched parts from original MiniWorld guns

Some foil to imitate tank valves

I do like Milliput, and that's a good use for the material.

Yes, a good idea. What is the set time of Milliput? I've never used it, but some other fillers tend to harden too quickly.

David

IMO, drying time is reasonable - use smallish quantities to avoid un-managable quantities on the model.

Have some water in a small cup or bowl beside you (small, single, dessert pots are good).

Milliput can be smoothed and cleaned easily with water which will save on sanding after.  Use a finger, craft knife, old credit card, maybe a brush - whatever works for you.  Clean out panel lines before it dries.

(Wet, fresh Milliput gets slippery in the hand - very slippery)

Thanks for the advice. Does it set much harder than plastic? I know that can be a problem when sanding. I'm also hoping to drill holes with a pin vice.

No problem with that

Smooth with water, removing waste, before the Milliput sets, and you can avoid most sanding.

Now, that's enough hijaking of Alexy's thread.
