IS-3M - Soviet heavy metal - Hungary 1956

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'll be building the Trumpeter IS-3M:-

I've always liked the look of the IS-3, but really it was all show and no go.  After scouring the interweb for images I finally found something useful:-

Go to 12 min 01 sec for a glimpse of the tank in question - no. 819.  What it shows are the side-skirts in place and no mantlet cover - both unusual to see, but as depicted in the kit.  I've got decals for the turret number from a Tamiya T-34 set, so I'm good to go.

An uncommon subject Dave but being a Trumpeter kit I'm sure it'll go together well. Good to see that footage of the real thing in action to set the stage for your project :speak_cool:

To help, my walkarounds

IS-3 on a pedestal,

made in the Donetsk suburb, Makeevka city:

http://walkarounds.scalemodels.ru/v/walkarounds/afv/before_1950/is-3_makeevka/

The hatches this IS-3 are open, because this tank was inspected in 2014 with the aim of participating in combat, but probably there was no engine or any other important equipment.

Unfortunately, the pedestal is very high, so I could not climb the tank and shoot it from above and inside.

Rapid progress Dave and at least the tracks are one-piece rather than individual links. You'll be finished and picking another project soon :D

Looking good Dave :thumbsup2:

I see your heading says 'Hungary 1956', so was this there to quell the uprising?

Cheers

Cliff

Hi Cliff,

Probably, based on the youtube video linked above I say so (just the last bit of it- although the whole video is interesting) .

Here's a screen shot.

Hi All

I've been working on the tracks.

fHxIvRjix96xUmWx73DIIgLGOUHclDGQazz9om6p

The tracks on the KV/IS series were particularly saggy and the rubber band tracks look nothing like them.

So I made eight sets of these....

PBd3NAzyEfATKhyTvTxn22Vd6vSOxz468bYEnzt5

... a bit of sprue and layers of plasticard, and wedged them between the top of the tracks and the hull.

Next add the side skirts.

And the sagginess is revealed beneath the skirt.

Nearly done now.

Dave.
