Hurricane footage on youtube, desert scheme repaints, in colour!

while trying to find some clip of canopy opening,  I found this

 

What caught my eye was the footage starting at 0.50

I presume this is Italy, or somewhere in the Med,  the planes are tatty, and look to have been in Desert colours but has the Middle Stone replaced with Dark Green, the undersides remaining  Azure Blue

Maybe @tonyot  will know more,  and if not suspect it will be of interest ?

 

the first look to be HW235 (?) 

 

this close up shows a replacement  nose panel

 

this shows the wing underside to be Azure Blue

 

this is a different plane to the other two

this shows well a fresh Dark Green and a faded dark Earth? 

 

This is HW189, "B"

 

 

the filthy fin flash is of note, and the letter B in red to the left,  this is seen under the nose in a mo

 

note the staining on the wing and general tattiness

 

 

the dark head armour is of note, I thought black but now prob dark green

This has been a very unexpected treat for me, hope it is for you,  anyone, @Graham Boak perhaps have a Squadron tie in for the serials?

According to Air Britain:

• HW189 served with 43 and 253 Squadrons.  43 had re-equipped with Spitfires before the Italian landings so 253 seems more likely.
• HW235 served with 7 Squadron SAAF and 94 Sq.  On 21/7/43 it swung on landing and hit a line of Hurricane at Savoia.

Can't see any overlaps in the basings of 253 and 94 Sqs to pin down the location more precisely but 94 seems to have spent nearly all its time in Italy at Savoia.

Fascinating footage!  I think any of us finishing a Hurricane as tatty and filthy as those would draw a criticism of it being over-weathered!

I'm not certain it is HW235, it's not that clear, so perhaps if you get chance have a look at anything similar.

 

Also HW235 (if that's what is is, it could be 239,  and it may not be "W" either)

HW looks the only fit with 235/9 

 

Also  looks to have overpainted squadron codes?  

 

It's quite odd seeing C type roundels and Dark Green/Dark Earth!

 

Does anyone have the DVD?   I have also unfairly overlooked the Canadian footage, as the first plane is quite a markings treat as well!

HW looks the only fit with 235/9 

I'm pretty happy with the HW.  Alternatives: 225 - blackout block, 239: 43 and 87 Sqs, SOC (no location) 28/2/45.  There's a common 43 Sq link between HW189 and HW239 but, since the Sq re-equipped with Spitfires in Feb 43 before the landing in Sicily, this would move the location back to Algeria.  That seems improbably early for the Dark Earth/Dark Geen upper surface camouflage.  Unless these were hacks retained by 43 Sq after conversion, which might explain their un-cared-for appearance.  

 

Interesting, BTW, that HW189 has rounded style numbers and HW235, just 46 apart numerically but from the next batch, has the angular style.

Hmm, this shot is make me doubt they were hacks

 

note the 2nd plane has the C type fin flash.

I wonder if if HW235/9  could be  HV275?  

I presume the quality on the DVD is better than Youtube.    The only place showing the DVD  in stock is in Canada though. 

Also at 2.12-2.14 in the take off sequence note the pranged Hurricane in the background.

You may have a point there!  Re HV275 Air Britain has it going to the Middle East (nfi) and then No Further Trace.

Cheers Troy,..... yeah I have the video, which I bought from Canada a few yeas ago,... and it blew me away too,....... it is in Tunisia mate. 43 Sqn Hurricanes were finished in these colours,........ in mid/late 1942 Hurri`s were still leaving the UK in Temperate Land scheme and only being re painted into desert colours after arriving in theatre if these were needed, ie in the Middle East. In early 1943 the desert scheme began to appear on the production line. From memory,.....isn`t there a grey and green one crashed on the airfield,....or a Spitfire?

And some models that I did of other Hurri`s wearing the Temperate Sea Scheme as delivered,.....this time in the Far East;

Haha,...Cheers Mike,...... yeah I`ve done a couple of IId`s and IV`s in various schemes,....... but they didn`t fit in here mate.
