It is the only logical business reason for the difference between the way Airfix operates now and the way it operated pre-1980. And I will note that Trumpeter/HobbyBoss is part of a much larger plastic products company, which ensures full utilisation of their production equipment. If you know anything about lean manufacturing, you know it frown on having expensive equipment sitting around doing nothing. There are other companies following the Airfix pattern: Wingnut Wings for one: they do all the design work, but the cutting of the molds and production of kits is all outsourced.

I think the low volume production and short runs is accepted. But I don’t know how you can state with certainty the arrangements or production schedules of 3P providers to Airfix without inside knowledge
