Romeo Alpha Yankee
Well, I did not think I would be starting the next build so soon as the P-8A needs a bit more work before getting the fuselage together. This build will be using the Hasegawa P-3C with scratch built conversion parts to bring it up to full AP-3C standards just prior to is retirement a mear 5 weeks ago. Most of the mods were done on this early AP-3C build last year for the BritModeller 10th Anniversary Group build. Edit: The reason for the early start is that my son requested a desk model for work, he is a P-3 technician. So this build is for him. I addition to the updates for that build I will have to add ESWP countermeasure sensors and dispensers as well as relocated the tail mounting points of the HF wire antennas to the horizontal stab tips. I started on the build last night with work on the wings and props, the cockpit is also painted and in with the aid of an Eduard colour etch set. This is one of my reference shots for a 10 Squadron aircraft, it will be a wheels up build on a stand. Build pictures to follow.
Romeo Alpha Yankee
here are some progress pictures, just some basic construction. The cockpit was already completed The props were assembled I backed the holes for the pylons with card prior to filling, and glued in the internal support for the stand

Romeo Alpha Yankee
I finally got some more progress pictures taken, I base coated the interior a nice grey so if you look in those big observation windows it won't be white. The fuselage went together next. and I reinforced the upper fuselage seam os it has a tendency to top open with any heavy handling. then the holes and grooves for the weapons pylons were filled with a sprue/glue mix. and some sanding was carried out. only to find I needed to fill a few more spots. The nacelles were next and I removed the oil cooler flaps which are moulded open, I flight they a usually closed. the holes were filled with card and set aside to set so they can be sanded and filled to be flush.

Graeme H
You should be the master of those Hasegawa Orions Ray
Romeo Alpha Yankee
Cheers Julian and Graeme, yep certainly each one gets easier. With this one on the go makes it 4 of these in various stages of construction at the moment (plus the other 4 that have been finished). I have another 4 in the stash I almost made this a double AP-3C build but decided I was getting ahead of myself. I will make 2 sets of AP-3C mod parts though, so when I build the one that stays in the collection I will have all the parts ready to go.
Romeo Alpha Yankee
The engines have been installed Test fit of the wing to the fuselage, after I clean up the engine nacelle seams then the wing will go on permanently
zebra
Looking good Ray. Surprised there isn’t a greater size difference between the P-3 and P-

Surprised there isn’t a greater size difference between the P-3 and P-8 Well Julian, I have been reminded the Welsh kit is around 10mm short forward of the wing root, now to fix it or not ??? Maybe I'm "lucky" my Kids just still ask for Money as if they asked for a build of something they'd be old and grey before they got it! This is build number 3 for him, I built an F-35 and F/A-18F when he was doing his technical training about 5 years ago, he was hoping for a posting to a fighter or strike squadron. He ended up on the other side of the country on P-3s! Update on the build, I have started to manufacture the AP-3C specific parts and hope to begin attaching them this weekend. Romeo Alpha Yankee
Major subassemblies together and some AP-3C specific resin added, time to start adding some antennas and clear parts to ready for priming.
Marlin
Lovely P-3 Ray. I'm sure I'll be reverting back to this thread when I'll get around to build my Marineflieger P-3. /Bosse

Romeo Alpha Yankee
Back to this build, I got motivated to add most of what was left to attach. I almost used the resin antennas and changed my mind And added some of the other resin parts, forward countermeasure dispensers and missile warning receivers The rear missile warning receivers also went on I noticed that most of these resin parts I added are not quite the right shape, so I may attack them with files to correct them as much as I can. The rest of the kit supplied and most of conversion set antennas were attached I have 6 more small UHF array antenna to make and add to the triangular plate under the fuselage and a missile sensor to add on the rear lower fuselage. A final overall shot with my TAP-3B (Training Australian P-3) shelf queen that I will finish when the AP-3C catches up paint wise.
Robert Stuart
Looks good Ray, though those knocky-off bits antena would worry me. Looking at your stand, do you make your own bases too?
Romeo Alpha Yankee
Thanks Rob, I am used to the knocky off bits, that is why I prefer styrene so you get a better bond with the fuselage. As for the stands, yes I make my own. I use different size craftwood bases or recycled picture frames and clear acrylic rod. The bases are 'decorated' as required.
Romeo Alpha Yankee
I spent the morning making a stand for the P-3, the other one in use was made for the TAP-3B. Also got most of the masking done and currently making the MAWS senor that goes on the lower rear fuselage. I keep finding some puttying imperfections which are also being remedied. I also cleaned up the bench so I had space to work on both of my maritime bombers

Romeo Alpha Yankee
Some final filling I have now primed it and found some issues with seams etc, so out with the Mr Surfacer and wet and dry I couple of more rounds with putty and wet and dry should see it ready for final prime and paint.

Robert Stuart
That looks very nice Ray. I presume from the wrap you'll use the stand while you are spraying?
