I'm glad all the family and you made it out safely. Everything else is just stuff that can be replaced. Lost family cannot. Hug your wife and kids and tell them it will be all right.

Glad to hear you're all physically well Jamie and as has already been said, things can be fixed or replaced, folks can't. Best wishes for the clear up & the eventual rebuild.

Wow, what a story.

I'm pleased to hear you're all OK (apart from the burnt hands) and, as others have said, do let me know if there's anything we can do to help :)

Fire extinguisher and alarms… ahem. That's made me think I should divert some modelling money - we have the alarms but not an extinguisher. I shall look for one.

My best wishes to you, Gill and the family and thanks for the prompt update.

Sounds like you had a very lucky escape all things considering, the modeller in me is glad that the business is fine but more importantly the real me is glad that you and the family are safe and sound. It sounds like you did all the right things with the info that you had at the time, hindsight is a pain in the bum apart from being a learning curve for the future so don't beat yourself up. Your tip about loft spaces and smoke alarms is a good one as well, I have them and CO detectors everywhere but not in the loft. Glad it wasn't a Paul Fisher scenario.

Cheers

Just seen this and glad you are OK.  Your daughter deserves credit for letting you know, and you for beliving in her.

That must have been a really long time for you waiting for the FB to arrive. Credit to them as well.

Hi everyone,

This is just a quick update from me. We got a local electrician up to the property this morning. He called in his brother who is a plumber. In addition, the architect who build the house himself (his family home for a while) also came up to see and advise.

As a result of all this, 2.5 hours saw electrical power, hot and cold water and central heating all re-established in the undamaged parts of the property.

The children are still at my mother's tonight, but came to see the house today and are happier now they've seen for themselves what's damaged and what's intact. Gill and I have set up our bedroom for the next wee while and are back in the house tonight.

In terms of Sovereign Hobbies, there is no technical reason why we can't be up and running again fairly soon. We still want a bit of breathing space to sort things out, but this time last night we didn't know if it was realistic to get the utilities back on due to potential water and wiring damage, and the practicalities of isolating all the copper pipework supply and return lines which were spewing water from all the joints where the fire melted the solder out when we re-pressurised the systems.

Thanks to some pretty intelligent design and construction of the house and a bit of luck in getting the right people in though, it proved quite straight forward to do. Which is nice.

I'm so sorry to hear about the fire at your home, but Thank the Lord that you and your family are all safe and sound.

I hope you managed to get your home repaired as soon as possible. Fingers crossed.

Hi Jamie,

glad you are all alright & damage is fixable but it makes you wonder what the effect would have been if such a fire had occurred in so many of our members loft space, it's hard to imagine a better source of fire fuel than stashes of cardboard, paper & plastic, I'd say it's a timely warning for everyone to upgrade their fire precautions. Also I'd say you need to take Penny out at the first opportunity & buy her a big bag of Smarties & a large Happy meal, you've got a real gem there,

cheers,

spad

Now we know everyone's safe, water, heat & power are always nice.  Great news - the rest can be fixed by the liberal application of insurance money

It was interesting to hear about the solder - I'd never have thought about that. :hmmm:

Hi Jamie

Really glad you are starting to make some progress.

Your Sparks and Plumber will most likely be doing this already, but I would get the entire properties wiring and plumbing checked and tested, regardless of which bit of the building it is in, as part of your insurance claim.

The original fault is most likely poor installation so it's a good idea to check everything else to give you peace of mind going forward.

Really great response from the retained Fire Fighters, we have the same system over on this side of Scotland and they do a superb job.

Best wishes Pat

Jamie, thank god all of the paints are ok....

Just kidding mate. I am incredibly happy that what could have been a catastrophe for you and your family has been turned into a mere pain in the proverbial.

Of course you have insurance to deal with next 💩...

You and your family are safe, thanks in part to your little tike there and your own response. The good work of the local flame busters saved the rest. You cannot ask for more than that.

All the best,

Greg

Good news Jamie and I'm pleased to hear that things are settling. Hopefully you'll be back to normal in no time.

Of course the main question is, what colours are you going to re-paint with? :D

I just went to the website to place an order and found the notice about the fire there instead!  I'm glad that everyone is OK and that the damage seems fixable. Ultimately, it's just material possessions that in most cases should be easy to replace. Good luck!

Hello again everyone. The loss adjustor visited today. She's going to appoint a surveyor due to the extent of structural damage, appoint a cleaning specialist to try to retrieve something from our personal possessions and make an emergency payment tomorrow so we can buy some clothes, new duvets etc. I've been using a tiara to comb my hair even...

But you always did that before the fire... ;)

Hope the insurance types do their stuff quickly and efficiently :)

Cheers,

I'm saying nowt, simply having enough hair to comb is a distant dream...

Trust me Jonners, you want none of it, it's a huge hassle, so thick and lustrous, hurts me back if I don't get it trimmed on the regular.
