Icarus
Evening all. Hoping to convert the 1963-vintage (!) Airfix 1/72 PBY-5A Catalina to this aircraft. Will update using the Eduard interior PE set and antennae plus the Quickboost radar . I will also be putting this on a representation of water for the first time in my modelling hobby - should be fun! Initial piccies: To be honest, I doubt I will use the resin engines as the kit ones look OK. I am also curious as to whether it is worth going through all the faff of replacing the props, but let's see where my modelling mojo takes me... Icarus
Morning all. Only got a chance to start this last night, so here are a few in progress photos, with PE added. Several have initial painting done, but no weathering or matt varnish (so a few flash reflections I'm afraid): Instrument panel and seats (looks like I need to adjust the control yokes a bit!) New PE waist gun support PE enhancement of waist guns This is a pretty basic kit, and you can see the amount of flash on one of the piccies. However, the shape looks spot on, and the Eduard PE refinements are brilliant. Hopefully will get some more progress this weekend. Icarus
A bit more progress - fuselage together now. This is probably the last time anyone will see the detail of the cockpit or the side machine gun emplacements, but at least I'll know they're there! I'm away with work in Saudi next week, but should get a couple of weeks' clear modelling time after this, so hopefully there will be a bit more progress soon. CliffB
Looking good and nice to see that you're keeping the rivets - the Catalina's one of those aircraft that looks wrong without them!
Icarus
Good evening everyone. Just a couple of updates here, then a question to the audience if I may? Initial masking (that was fun!) Initial primers So to my questions. I have been trying to find out two things about this colour scheme: 1. Was the upper camouflage overall Dark Sea Grey, or a mixture of slate grey and this? There are various images on the internet arguing either way. This thread (on Britmodeller!) looks the most convincing, (especially the image by Coors54) but I wonder if there has been any more about this? As the pilot is still alive, I suppose I could try and track him down and find out the answer directly, but that does sound a bit too "dedicated"/creepy... 2. Same question for the radar cover located just behind cockpit. Kind regards, Icarus
Robert Stuart
Nice work with your masking there Icarus (looks complex). I hope somebody can give you an answer to your upper camo question.
Icarus
OK. Slow progress with this one, but getting there now. The Catalina is fully painted and I've added initial oil-based weathering. I will probably add some more around the exhausts with pastels. I am also midway through removing the canopy and window masks. Still need to add the chin turret, the aerials, windscreen wipers and the depth charges, but some of these will be done right at the end to reduce the risk of damage. I am looking to mount this in a water diorama - this is the initial work on this: And yes - next steps are to paint this a good murky English sea colour, then add filer resin and put the completed Catalina in it whilst it dries. Icarus
OK - all finished last night, but due to a complete IT meltdown can only upload piccies today. This is work on the base, then some completion pictures plus on with the Cat "in-situ" on its base.. https://photos.app.goo.gl/sDWspxZyKojp3HPV9 https://photos.app.goo.gl/4VHgzqKtoLuDypQW7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/E2zS8erQ56X8BpiE8 https://photos.app.goo.gl/7eohuMuDxfqiLk7J9 https://photos.app.goo.gl/mFbS8wzWq81MXorz6 https://photos.app.goo.gl/ST5K2TCMGUUQoQ948 I've enjoyed this one!
