984 Radars in 1/700....

Good afternoon folks!

My current project is an "alternate post war RN" - a fascinating topic- various alt designs require a 984 radar perched somewhere- I've scoured the internet for suppliers of said 3D searchlight radar but to no avail...not even Shhhh....you know who ..can supply 😞  So, has anyone tried scratchbuilding these little beauties? If so, any tips would be most welcome! My modelling skills are...lets say.. primitive... I can cope with bits of plastic but PE is beyond me!

Cheers

I haven't tried it yet but, looking at this view, it should be just a case of making slices of styrene sheet; from 20 or 30thou (0.5 or 0.75mm), of the profile and sticking together. Then add a little disk at the front and make up a platform.

There are scale plans of the Type 984 radar in this book.  Check if you can't get it from your local library, they may be able to obtain it through the library sharing scheme.

Another source is the Airfix 1:600 scale HMS Victorious kit.  This has that radar and, if you can obtain or borrow that part, then you could scale it down to 1:700

I'm in the same boat, but I do have the Airfix 1:600 scale HMS Victorious kit. I'm going to ask a mate who is on Christmas standdown atm, if he knows anyone who has a 3D printer and be able to a few in 1/700 for me.

If someone could let me have drawings I'll give it a go to design a 3D print.

Link to my Shapeways shop, if you have not seen it -

Would their be any interest from anyone else in larger scales?

Bit of a discussion here about an alternate CW RN (I'm "sunk") - lots of potential "what ifs" for cruiser rebuilds in which the use of re built "light fleets" require a cruiser escort with flag facilities and fighter direction radars. I've gone for a stretch on the current project to rebuild surviving "counties" along the lines of the "1960 cruiser" designs from the late 40's. The sketch is of a Fiji but I've not been able to resist having a go - using the Spanish Canarias as an example of how these old ladies could carry on until the mid 70's!

So what are you planning Exkiwi?

Cheers!

There was a good article in one of the old Conway Warship quarterlies about the 60s cruiser designs. There was no way they were going to happen given the state of the nation's finances but fascinating to see what the designers could come up with - whether or not aided by liquid lunches.

Indeed- the 18,000 ton Sea slug armed cruiser simply wasn't going to happen, but its an interesting exercise to think about how they could have applied those principles to existing hulls. Modernised ships (such as the interwar QEs) seem to retain a lot more archaic features and interest than shiney new stuff.

Btw- how do you post pics on this forum?

A-ha! I found this on google books yesterday- Warship 2006? Article by George Moore? One of the drawings took my breath away- a flush decked cruiser with a raised shelter deck (plated up) with turrets arranged in a diamond/lozenge fashion like the old French pre dreads- in fact the whole thing looked like a 50's take on the Rurik or a late C19th armoured cruiser. I'm guessing the "wing" turrets afforded considerable arcs for AA guns.

I have a Airfix 1/600 scale HMS Victorious, with a plan to convert it to a 1/700 Malta Class Carrier in a late 70’s era and another one of HMAS Hermes as HMG had offer HMS Hermes (R12) or HMS Victorious as a replacement for HMS Melbourne in 1/700 as part of the Far East Fleet in Singers operating under the Commonwealth Defence Organisation (CDO) in conjunction with the Commonwealth Common Market (CCM. This was an idea floated by the former late Kiwi PM at the “Big Norm Kirk” and his Indian counterpart as a way of stopping the UK Government from bugging off to join the European Common Market at the time. As they knew along a with others that I know and occasionally I catch with when I’m back home in NZ, in the UK or via the net. That they all knew that the time that  UK in the long term wish they had never signed up to the European Common Market and instead help formed the CCM based around the 1971 Singapore Declaration/ Commonwealth of Nations values.

Remember there are 50 odd countries in the Commonwealth of Nations than the EU member nations and we all have to some degree of the following or if not the following:-

Common English Law, a Common Language, Strong Sporting tires and Strong Defence tires which all equal to strong Trading tires. With a strong commitment to Education, Health, Environment, Human Rights and Aid Development etc. Which us the Commonwealth of Nations have something greater than the EU or the UN for that matter can't do and that is a common bond, working together as team which has scared the a number of nations over time and other nations with envy at what we can achieve.

As the old Trade Union saying goes United We Stand, Divided We Fall.

Hi Niall- I'd certainly be interested in a few of them. Not sure if the drawing posted by bootneck is sufficient to scale from?

Hi Exkiwi- best of luck with your builds! It'd be great to see what you come up with. Its a fascinating period of history with so many "what if" potential- I'm certainly inspired by the various designs and a twin island effort is certainly on my list.  Btw, according to the "Royal Navy Model Ships" group on FB Imperial Hobbys are due to bring out a 1/700 HMS Colossus this year- should be ideal for a Melbourne conversion?

I’ve got a couple Tigers which are going to get modified with SeaDart and was hoping to add a couple SeaWolfs, but I haven’t found any SeaWolfs anywhere including Shapeways in 1/700. I was told that there was an idea in the 70’s to refit the Counties with SeaDart as the powers at be realised that the SeaSlug was a wee bit dated. That might be some interesting reading as I found just recently reading Neil McCarts book on HMS Hemes, when the RN were planning on upgrading her to take the FAA F-4’s and as l always thought R12 was a little bit on the short side/ marginal for F-4 OPs. (Must have a look in David Hobbs book on British and Commonwealth Carriers).

Yes, I did see Imperial Hobbies bring out a Colossus Class Carrier and  I was thinking that I can do the RAN’s first two Carriers . As my wife’s Pop’s was in the first Commissioning Crews including a deployment to Korea and also the HMAS Melbourne before  his discharged at terminal Seaman rank for his branch after he turned down a commission which meant he would be away from his young family at the time, as his training was done in the UK at the time.

Yes reading Norman Friedman’s books on the RN ship design and popping over to Shipbucket does make for some interesting models and some interesting what if’s had the Pollies in the UK and within Commonwealth of Nations had got their poo-poo together . There is a Kiwi called Bryan Gould an Ex Rhodes Scholar and Ex British Labour MP doing some wonderful writing about the current poo-poo fight  in the House Commons and what could’ve been under the Commonwealth of Nations. As he said at time in 1973, that the UK joining the EEC was going to be their  greatest political blunder for the UK in the long term and when the Commonwealth of Nations offered so much more in so many ways over the longer term.
