This is first time I’ve used Flickr , so bear with me . Seems ok though . The kit is going together really well , first time I’ve built an Aoshima kit . Seat harnesses will be finished off when rollcage is fitted . Older rally cars are easier to paint up I find as most parts tend to be black or white . More soon , Gary .

More progress on the Celica . I fitted the rollcage , which proved fiddly . You need to fit the dashboard after the cage . I wrapped the harness belts around the lower rollcage bar , again very fiddly . I use red electricians tape to make harnesses . It’s effective enough for my liking .

What I do, after copying the BBCode from Flickr, is paste the link into the post and then, before giving an "enter", remove everything except what's in between "img" and "/img" (also remove the "[" and "]")

Nice work so far Windy, i'm interested in getting one of these kits at some point.

As you said, there seems to be a glut of classic kits being put into production at the moment, and some nice modern stuff too!

Having nearly been squished as a kid by an Audi Quattro S1 at the Chatsworth Stages in 1985 (no health and safety back then :)),

i'm a massive fan of classic rally cars and anything Group B especially.

I should be receiving the Aoshima Lancia delta S4 in the post any day, it's better than Christmas!!!

Thanks for all your kind comments and advice . I'm not very good with computers !! I've got a few Tamiya Toyota kits , so this will make a nice addition to the collection . The build quality of the kit seems somewhere between Tamiya ( very good ) and Hasegawa ( a bit flimsy ) . More soon , Gary.

A bit of progress this afternoon on the Celica. I got the chassis finished off . Doorcards fittrd . These have storage pockets you need to glue on , with a zip detail . I used a silver paint pen to bring the zip out . The interior mirror has a tiny chrome sticker which is a nice detail touch . On the co drivers side is a ventilation pipe . Because you are mounting black onto black it was difficult to see the mounting holes . Another nice detail though . I then made a start on body decals . The main red colour scheme came in three pieces . I cut the roof decal in half for easier placement . The side decals went down well , with only a few cuts needed for a better fit . That’s all for now , Gary .

This photo shows the mirror and cool air pipe , and some dashboard detail . You can see the cut I had to make on the door card to get it to fit under the end of the dashboard . Needs a bit of touching up !

Co drivers side decal lined up better than drivers side . Annoying really because it’ll be displayed drivers side on ......

Some decals added today . They are going on very well , using just warm water and a damp cotton bud . Even the big Toyota decal on the side folded over the wheel arch easily .

All the air vents on the car have black decals and black lines that go around the edge of each vent . These lines are very flimsy and I thought might be awkward to apply , but as can be seen went on well .  They look proper and certainly saves painting them on . The photo below shows the air vent detail decals .

Thanks for looking , Gary .

  • 3 weeks later...

So all was going well . All decals applied , shell ready for some lacquer.  I used Tamiya TS13 clear , as I have in the past . Then horror as the spray was applied some of the decals bubbled and melted . The worst was the roof , but some of the air vent decals have got damaged as well . I think I ll  be able to touch some up with paint and a steady hand . The other way to look at it is African rallying is harsh so it could have occurred during the event .......

Gary .

You can see some of the melting around the edges of some of the decals.

This picture shows some of the bubbling on the roof .

Tamiya TS-13!!!! Oh no!!! That stuff is lethal. I used it once many years ago on a Tamiya 1/12 Ferrari F190. Luckily I only applied it onto the nosecone. It melted the decals just like you have shown here. I vowed to never use it again and I haven't. I now use Mr Top Coat or occasionally Zero 2k, but I'm cutting back the use of 2k and looking for alternatives.

You can buy replacement decals on Spotmodel I believe..

Thanks , Steve . Is Mr Top Coat from Mr Colour range ?

It's only available in spray aerosol can. But I decant it and thin it with a small amount of Gunze aqueous thinner and spray via airbrush. It is very kind on decals, never had a bad reaction ever..

Thanks , Steve.  I will buy a can . I don't want any dramas on my next builds.

Gary  .

You can spray from the can, it works well. Airbrushing it gives a bit more control and you seem to use less of it. Light coats are best and build up the layers slowly. The more light coats you apply the better shine you get. One thing, it doesn't have that ultra treacle like shine of 2k clear, but a more realistic shine level, like on the real car I think. I usually apply 3-4 light coats, then allow to dry before applying one wetter final finish coat. It can be sanded and polished when dry for a perfect finish.
