28ZComeback
Does anyone know if there is a Lockheed F-5G Recce Lightning available in full kit or conversion in 1/48? I am aware of the Academy F-5E. Thank you and best wishes for a happy, healthy new year.

Koster Enterprises did a Lightning conversion set, https://www.scalemates.com/kits/237137-koster-aero-enterprises-6-lockheed-p-38-conversions I can't remember (and mine not too hand) if it has an F5-G, looking at F5-G photos, I don't think so, though the P-38L nose shown maybe a starting point? I don't know enough about the finer details, @ReccePhreak may well know more. HTH
72modeler
Troy, The nose illustrated on the RH side of the Koster conversion set you posted looks correct for an F-5G, which I think was the recon version of the P-38L, based on the photos of original WW2 examples- you can see the landing light in the LH wing, which was a distinguishing feature of the P-38L. I have listed some links below that show F-5G's- hope they will be helpful to 28Z. (The first link shows all surviving P-38's including two F-5G's) 1/48 isn't my scale, but I would think the Hasegawa or Academy P-38J would be the starting point- just remember to correct the landing light, make the underwing compressibility flaps out of scrap flat photoetch, plasticard, or decal stock, and either make or find a pylon that has the gun camera housing at the front to mount under the LH wing, IIRC. I wouldn't want to scratchbuild the nose, as it sure is an unusual shape! DB/Airwaves did make a resin F-5G nose in 1/72, but would be extremely hard to find, I would think- as rare as a Mach 1 kit that can be built without any filler! silberpferd
I'm afraid the nose on the RH side is more likeky a pathfinder nose https://www.worldwarphotos.info/gallery/usa/aircrafts-2-3/p-38-lightning/p-38j-15-44-23139-pathfinder-with-radar/ which is not the same than the F-5G, but could be a good starting point, however. Academy did this version https://www.super-hobby.fr/products/P-38L-Pathfinder.html Laurent
