Audi Quattro s1 e2 - 1/24 engine scratch build

As this kit finally arrived near the end of the last build, I’ve been itching to have a look at doing a scratch built engine for this kit.

i have a reji model resin kit of the Quattro s1 in the stockpile too, but that doesn’t have an engine with it either. The profil24 kit is the only one I’ve seen that has engine and rear cooling details included. So I’ll have to try to build my own

first had to remove the bonnet as cleanly as possible

A9031145-915D-4FCA-B274-8D721C80AB8F_zps

then using real real life pics and the instructions from the profil24 kit as a rough guide, start to build an engine block (apologies for blurriness!)

22F94BFD-7841-46B5-BB26-D8B0B4F2E513_zps

then i measured out and pre-drilled for the top of the engine block, including the raised off fins/strips that run length-wise across the top

DEEBD6FD-FE30-41D6-A7CD-2F44F550B03F_zps

Once the top was done (lots of patience later!) I made some plug covers from plastic tubing and some further detailing for the top. Then made a cover for the cogs at the front left of the engine too.

Here it all is in place

That’s about it for now, next I’m either going to start on the headers/manifolds or possibly start to mask out the engine bay.

Excellent start, engine looks great!! How do you find the kit in general? I've held off buying it because I already have the Reji kit that i built some years ago into a decent replica of this car. Not sure weather I need another model of the same car, but if it's a good model I'd certainly consider building it again..

Hi steve

thabks for the kind words, some lovely work on your photobucket too there mate.

i’m pleasantly surprised with the quality of the beemax kit to be honest, there’s lots of good detail in there. Quite a bit to do with the body of the car with flash lines etc, but nothing terrible. I got the photoetch parts from beemax too which is also good quality.

reproduction of the wheels are better than on my Reji and scale production Audi sport Quattro kits (in my opinion 😀) so I might be making some copies of the beemax ones for the other two kits?

im just glad someone is recreating the group b monsters as plastic kits, I did buy the metro 6r4 resin kit from profil24 only to see that belkits are going to do gravel versions of that one too. Belkits version won’t have the same level of detail I suppose?

Hi ian

yes, there are a lot of interesting kits coming in the near future. I’ve pre-ordered the beemax lancia delta s4 but the arrival date seems to just keep moving further and further into next year 😂😂😂

Thanks. Well the Reji kit was a real test of patience to be honest. Lots of work just to get the body into a paintable state. I'm not sure weather the Belkits will have engines in the Metro 6R4 kits? Although you can see into the engine bay so I assume that there will have to be some level of detail in there...

The Lancia S4 is already released. Mine was posted at the end of last week. So it should be in my hands very soon...

Hasegawa 037 is a nice kit that can be built into a fairly detailed replica. Belkits have already announced the Ford RS200, however I'm not sure of the release date on it...

You can get all the announcements etc, but I don't believe them till I see it in the flesh ;) Belkits Manta took ages to materialise and we won't even go for the Tanmodel Buccaneer that's been arriving for at least 2 years now, promised for next year as well 😂😂

I agree, but I think Belkits are true to their word. I don't mind if the release takes a while as long as it comes in the end 😀😀

Back to work now so I have less time to progress, ah well...

Started work on a bulkhead for the rear rear of the engine bay, trying to mimic the car’s as closely as possible. More details to add to this panel as we go on...

B252532F-854D-40C3-B0BF-4924824872BB_zps

Managed to utilise some parts saved from other kits to fashion a turbo

F2A77467-51AF-4E55-8F86-24CAAD8389F2_zps

then attach that to the engine and make a re-routed exhaust from underneath the car up and through to a better position than the original in the kit.

E4EFADA1-154C-4AA1-98A9-A761626DAF9C_zps

Using the kit radiator to mock up the position for the turbo and various exhausts to the left as we look down, and also mock up an air funnel to the right of the engine.

Then I’m going to try to make a new radiator and connect the turbo side. There’s another cool looking unit to go between the engine and.theair funnel to make too that needs the Audi rings on it. Should be fun? 😬

The Quattro arrived on Friday and the Lancia S4 is in transit :)

Just like buses, you wait for ages and they all turn up together 😂

@pau10wen  the engine bay is coming on a treat :) Keep up the good work

thanks Ian, I've got some more pito post today when I can.

I've just posted something similar on another rally car build thread. My Lancia S4 is in the post and can't arrive quickly enough :)

I feel a bit daft for having bought the Reji metro 6R4 and Audi Quattro S1 kits in the past, ah well

I haven't got a crystal ball, these plastic kits all seem great quality so far.

The belkits stuff looks good too, I have a Mk1 escort to go at at some point too

You won't be disappointed with the Mk1, it was the 2nd car kit I built (Colin McRae Scooby 1st) and It fitted together really well, can't fault the quality of the kit :)

While these type of cars (ie closed-wheel tin-tops) may not be my cup-of-tea for modelling purposes, I still love motorsport of ANY formula and have fond memories of many occasions from years(????) gone by...… I see a lot of potential in this project, so keep up the good (scratch) work matey.

Cheers, H

Then the part that I’ve left til last(ish) to give me time to figure out how to do it 😂😂😂

basic shape of the next part that links the air tube to the engine block.

8E8AA5CB-E688-4FD5-88EB-A3A494346024_zps

Rounded off and added more detail, plus the pipe work for the top side

34D0FD14-7659-448A-A3B5-36F5A4B36158_zps

Then the pipes from the engine block side

CA2FB646-A4E1-4C08-9FE9-C0F3084C9F19_zps

then the really daft part, audi’s Famous (and intricate) ring logo

FF95E260-9B8C-4248-BC3A-F2FDB197B67F_zps

And finally (after lots more patience) test fit in the engine bay,  with everything linked up. Also with another pipe detail from the new part across the engine and into the bulkhead

BCCF317E-479B-4268-A996-A8A914EE248E_zps990153C8-53D6-49BA-9EA0-756CE8CE2DE4_zps

thats all for now, next more detail on the bulkhead I think, or possible have a look at the front corners of the engine bay?

maybe a drink first to settle my stress levels back down 😂😂😂

Hi guys

apart from a trip to the autosport show in Birmingham with my eldest on Saturday, I’ve had the time this weekend to do some more work on the Audi engine bay

After building the right hand side parts I decided that the turbo looked too small (That and my beemax lancia s4 kit finally arrived, and the turbo on that is mahoosive in comparison 😂)

so i increased its size....

F1EEF28A-62E9-436D-90ED-10E70AC4B4F6_zps

also added the side side panels of the engine bay to box the whole thing in a little. Then to some detail work on the separate flat area behind the engine

70FEB0ED-909E-436B-8E0A-B81E7C8AAEFC_zps

more to finish in that area soon. But I decided to have a break from that and look at the suspension strut top area and try to replicate that and the strengthening bar that will sit across the top of the engine...

A3FFDC0B-7C8C-4707-9532-5A8DA2D41B00_zps

At that point I discovered that some of the pipework hits the new bar 😂😂😂...

so i I had a stiff drink...

doesnt look too bad, I think I’ll shave half a millimetre off the bottom of the engine block and it will lower everything to clear the bar anyway, just not tonight, lol!

heres the results so far all put back together, and thanks as always for looking 😀
