nimrod54
As another year approaches the end, 2018 has been quite a fruitful year in terms of completing projects that I have started, some of those were carry overs from 2017 Group Builds. First one for the year was this 1/72 British Arctic Air Route Expedition de Havilland DH 60G Gypsy Moth Coupe completed early in January. by John L, on Flickr Having failed to make the original Made in Britain II deadline, this Dapol/Kitmaster kit of English Electric's Deltic Prototype DP1 was completed as a KUTA entry towards the end of January, by John L, on Flickr And the last of 2017's carry over builds was this 1/72 Matchbox kit of the T-2C Buckeye, which I had finished by mid February, along with my 1/48 Accurate Miniatures Grumman Avenger TBF a month later. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr Now on with the builds that I started in 2018. There was a bit of a lull at this point before a busy summer schedule, and the completions to meet Group Build deadlines would require some careful planning during the coming months. It was a return to my favoured scale of 1/144 for my next two finishes and this Mark1 1/144 Hawker Hunter T Mk.8 was completed for the Hawker Siddeley GB in May, along with a Daco Boeing 737-300 finished in a Western Pacific Simpsons scheme for that Single Type Group Build. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr I took part in the Carriers Ahoy GB and the RAF Centenary GB, the entries for these were due in July, so this pair of Wildcats - Tamiya 1/48 and Airfix 1/72 - plus a mini diorama of a Hornet 18-G launch in 1/144 scale would be my entries for the former GB. by John L, on Flickr Having watched several catapult launch videos of F18 Hornets I decided to remove and reposition the control surfaces to depict a typical set-up just prior to launch. by John L, on Flickr And this 1/72 kit of an Airfix Canberra PR.9 in retirement scheme markings became my entry for the latter GB. by John L, on Flickr I had four builds planned for the Airfix The Golden Years GB and another two for the Airfix 1/72 Mustang Dedicated Kit GB, so August and September would prove to be pretty hectic, and in the end only one of the Mustang builds would make it over the line. The four planned builds for the Airfix GB would start with a Captain Scarlet Angel Interceptor along with a Fairey Firefly, Avro 504K and Bristol Bloodhound. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr This OOB build (excluding seat) of an RAF Mustang Mk IV was the only one to make it over the line for the dedicated kit build though. by John L, on Flickr Things have slowed down since then and my only completions have been this Eduard 1/48 Hanriot HD.1 for the Eleventh Hour GB, which was finished just after the deadline. I have also recently finished off a Revell 1/144 scale F-5E in Patrouille Suisse markings. This has been sitting around for the last couple of years, so I decided to try and wrap it up as one of this years KUTA entries. by John L, on Flickr by John L, on Flickr All in all quite a successful year for me, with a couple of other builds currently in progress; a 1/72 Grumman F3F-2 for the Grumman GB, and another KUTA entry being a 1/144 Eurofighter Typhoon. I also have an Edelweiss A320 as a further possible entry for this years KUTA, but none of these will be completed this year. If you have got this far, thanks for sticking with it and I hope that you have enjoyed my stroll through 2018. Here's hoping that 2019 will be as fruitful.

I don't think that there will be quite as much variety this year, but I will try to maintain the standard. The Canberra was a nice kit to build, made easier because I closed up the cockpit, so there was no need to put that right. On 01/01/2019 at 17:41, Hockeyboy76 said: Another good year of builds buddy. Some of those will form a small collection of RAF types for this base, picked up from the Coastal Kits stand at Telford. Hope that you manage to squeeze some modelling time in, between DIY projects. by John L, on Flickr On 02/01/2019 at 14:26, Reini78 said: Sweet work there! Cookenbacher
I'm so glad to have stumbled on to this thread, I'm a fan of your builds John, and here they are all in one place! I can't pick a favorite, but the Simpsons 737 and Firefly do stand out.

I can't pick a favorite, but the Simpsons 737 and Firefly do stand out. Thanks a lot Cookie, when it comes down to it I would be hard pressed to pick a favourite too. I am a Simpsons fan and the 737 gave me the opportunity to combine my near obsession for aircraft along with a love of the programme into a fun build. The Firefly makes up really well and with a bit more work on my part, like removing the raised detail and scribing fresh panel lines, could have been better. But as a part of the Airfix Golden Years GB I wanted to try and keep it as close to the box contents as I could. However, I did add an etch interior but sadly that is buried under the thick canopies. I had a lot of fun with all of the builds I made for the Airfix GB, in fact the whole experience was a pleasure to be a part of. A quick look in the GB gallery shows a wide subject range, and the number of completed builds reflects the nostalgia felt for this manufacturer. I enjoyed making the F-18G carrier deck launch scene, and after watching countless launch videos I decided to remove and reposition all of the control surfaces to reflect an aircraft going through its final checks just prior to take off. Not an easy task in 1/144th scale, but I hope that I have caught some of the atmosphere Strangely, the three bi-planes have been the most satisfying builds for me. There is something about being able to sit back at the end of a rigging session, thinking how the heck did you get that spiders web in place without breaking anything. Most importantly, I got a lot of pleasure from all of the models I made in 2018 and I hope that 2019 will be as enjoyable.
