Dansk
I hope its ok to join this party a little late? Being inspired by Enzo Matrix’s Buffalo Mosquito thread in this group build and a bunch of exciting images on the interweb: I would like to build a coastal command Mozzy. I have this Tamiya 1:48 FB VI in my small stash which will fit perfectly for such a build. I have been lurking on the forum for a while now but am an inexperienced modeller, having done it a lot as a kid (a loooooong time ago) and have recently returned to the hobby now with a couple of builds under my belt (with varying degrees of finesse shall we say) so this is my first WIP so be gentle with me and excuse my lack of terminology and experience but i figure i’d like to contribute and have a lot of fun with the build. It’s not going to be a rivet counting exercise but i hope it turns out ok with a little luck. A canopy mask set i purchased with the kit a while ago. i have also ordered a photoetch set and a coastal command squadron 333 decal set from hannants which i’m awaiting to arrive. maybe rf 769 (KK · P) could fit the bill (the kit has relevant decals already but i think it would be cool to customize the scheme a little) (i dont own the copyright to the image above it is posted while i'm asking permission) (i dont own the copyright to the image above it is posted while i'm asking permission) so here we go! I started the kit this evening labelling the sprues for ease of use. I then joined the forward sections of the fuselage to the aft sections with some extra thin, (adding the cockpit door and tail wheel mudguard, after taking the photo) (i intend to have the undercarriage down and door and bomb-bays closed). and I gave everything that needed it, a good coat of tamiya XF-71 airbrushed without primer. so thats where we are. no muck ups so far! 🤗 wish me luck! 🤪 Edited February 27, 2019 by Dansk

Dansk
I didnt really have opportunity to work much on the kit today but i managed to mask the canopy. i’m going about the build in an odd order (waiting for the cockpit PE.) it looks ok IRL but the macro shots really expose the warts. I’m not sure the eduard masks are 101% perfect (a good workman blames his tools 😄) but with a bit more of nudging and delicate trimming i think i can get them to look ok. i also did a bit of light reading on 333 squadron and came across some awesome images at axis and allies paintworks Some of the in flight shots really really take you into their world back then. And the nosecone here really gets a beating (is that tyre flat?) And see the nosecone to fuselage join here: looks like my last kit build with filler (This tyre is definately flat) Link here: http://axis-and-allies-paintworks.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?13611 333 squadron on wikipedia: The Squadron was established as a detachment (No. 1477 (Norwegian) Flight) under the 210 Squadron of the British Royal Air Force, on 8 February 1942, by Captain Finn Lambrechts. The squadron was located in Woodhaven, Fife, Scotland. On 10 May 1943 333 squadron was formed from this flight[1] with Mosquito Mk.IIs at RAF Leuchars and PBY-1b Catalinas at Woodhaven. The Mosquitoes were operated on shipping reconnaissance flights along the Norwegian coast, whilst the Catalinas carried out anti-submarine patrols to the north of Scotland. The squadron's Catalinas also operated in the 'Special Duties' role landing both personnel and supplies at points along the Norwegian coast.[1] In September 1944 the Mosquito flight joined the Banff strike wing and acted in the Pathfinder role. However, on 30 May 1945 this flight was redesignated No. 334 (Norwegian) Squadron RAF and No. 333 became a pure Catalina unit.[2] May 1942 : back from a mission over Norway. Nordahl Grieg 2nd from right On their first mission to Norway, the poet, and news-reporter Nordahl Grieg was with 333 Squadron to report from the flight. This was then a secret mission. After this mission, he wrote the poem Flagget. During the Second World War, the missions of 333 Squadron included dangerous search-and-destroy submarine missions, patrolling, and secret missions along the Norwegian coastline, behind the German defence lines. They landed and picked up agents, illegal radios, and transmitters. They also dropped Christmas presents to the Norwegian population, and did search and rescue missions. Post-warEdit After the war, the squadron returned to Norway, being based at Fornebu, helping to rebuild the northern parts of the country, transporting people and equipment from the south to the north. dnl42
Excellent start! You've got some nice research material to help. Nice use of the pens. I do have the chrome paint pen, but perhaps I'll try a Sharpie for other colors.

Dansk
A little update on the mosquito: this has really been a learning experience for me this round. i've been working on the nacelles, trying to get rid of the joins by filling and sanding: i'm really so bad at doing this, but its slowly getting there on one of them at least. i have no idea what i'm doing there really - it's trial and error sometimes it looks good sometimes it looks rubbish. i'be provisionally sprayed some stuff rubber black... and i've provisionally sprayed some stuff metallic silver... I forgot to get rid of the ejection pin marks on the rear of the wheel guards 🙄 so i will hit that next session I am also planning to drill out holes like the real thing (also waiting for a small hand drill order to arrive - as i havent got one currently) trying to replicate these... https://goo.gl/images/eLTvaB The main gear wheels i should have painted the centres first in silver, then masked them with the eduard masks and sprayed the tyres black after. but i didnt 🙄 so i tried masking the black with a scribing mask 🤓 but the result wasnt so good 🙄 a lot of overspray - maybe i should have used the next size down also? but anyway - lesson learnt - i'll clean it up with a black coat and the eduard mask next session i also tried applying liquid mask for the first time. applying it to the the tail wheel tyre - it dried gloss-like and transparent Can anyone tell me is this correct? can i now spray over this? I attached the wingtips also, more work to be done on those next session i think thats it i hope the cockpit PE arrives soon so i can move on with building the interior thanks for looking in! any comments are welcome 🙂 Edited December 17, 2018 by Dansk
Robert Stuart
This is an interesting build, I like your detailed comments on progress. Liquid mask does dry transparent, or at least translucent, depending on brand - good luck removing it (it can pull whatever is below). Opaque bits may not have dried yet, though if they've formed a skin they may be good enough to spray over.

Thanks for the good advice Robert. 👍 I will try spraying next time I’m in the man-cave and see how it works. Pulling off the stuff underneath doesn’t sound good. Let’s see what happens. Again i think i should have laid down thr silver first and hand painted the black tyres after 🙄

Dansk
...Really is a good tool to have Nils i agree. apologies for the heavy image content in this whole thread, theres a lot of images! But this afternoon the postman brought some goodies: The eduard cockpit PE so i can finally start on the office. It looks great in the flesh. And the Aviaeology Decals together with their fantastic reference material / guides really awesome stuff. i'm no expert either but the decals look really good quality to my untrained eye. So now i have chose my subject from the 8 available and its mosquito HR116 (3·F) I love the white drop tanks and lack of exhaust shrouds, the exhaust stains look great in the reference shot also. again apologies for all the shots again! cant wait to dive into this stuff and start using it. Dansk
Main gear development here - gonna pull back the initial weathering next round Can anyone help me? Tamiya call for a rusty red brown colour for the tanks on the main gear but real shots from the www show unpainted metal tanks - see here - https://goo.gl/images/MqR73G which is correct? Vingtor
A local researcher, who has a strong interest in Coastal Command, has recently come up with a theory about the Special Coastal Duties Scheme A on Norwegian Mosquitos. He argues that only the upper surfaces were repainted, while the lower surfaces remained Medium Sea Grey. I will search for his posts on this. Nils i would love to see what he writes the info on that decals paperwork i got seem to suggest the same thing Nils -read these texts below (also note on the non camouflaged gray aircraft that they seem to show hints of a camouflaged aircraft being overpainted "roughly" with a very slight hint at camouflage peeking through

I now realise the bummer about picking this scheme is that if one is really accurate then maybe we need to completely paint it once in camo from the factory delivery and then overpaint it in the sds-a scheme of extra dark sea gray with a lot of thinners so it perhaps bleeds though here and there 😳
