Panzer IV Reference

Right - to get us started - some possible Panzer IV links.

First up - as a general overview of Panzer IVs you could look at Wikipedia:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_IV

I'm always a bit wary about the total accuracy of Wikipedia but, if you find something of interest, you can always cross reference the information on other sites or ask your fellow modellers on here.

Wikipedia have a list of variants here:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Panzer_IV_variants

Same proviso as above.

I quite like the Tank Encyclopaedia and links are available to the variants lower down the page:

http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/nazi_germany/Panzer_IV.php

Another site that includes information about Pz.IVs is Panzer IV The Workhorse:

http://panzerivtheworkhorse.blogspot.com/

Please post below any links you think might be useful to others building Panzer IVs or it's variants.

Kind regards,

Stix

My general go-to reference is "Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War 2" by Doyle and Chamberlain. The specific vehicle I'm going to do is pictured (photo not a profile!) on page 63 of Bruce Culver's "Panzer Colours 2". Another great volume with plenty of pictures of Panzer IV is Jean-Paul Pallud's "Panzers in Normandy Then and Now".

I've been helping a few people in several threads with information regarding the various tracks used on the Panzer IV. I thought I'd write a brief summary here so it's easier & more centralized for anyone else with questions.

Here is a diagram showing most of the tracks used on the Panzer IV along with the versions they were used on & when, I'll go into more depth below.

After suffering though the harsh Russian winter in 1941 with tanks getting stuck the in the mud & snow the Germans developed a new set of tracks with extensions cast onto the ends to decrease the ground pressure. The extensions proved to be quite fragile & would often break off (if you plan to use these I'd suggest snapping the ends of a few 😛).

The information I have posted here is just what I personally know off the top of my head & could quickly find so should only be used as a guide, I suggest doing further research if you are making a specific vehicle. I'll update this post in the future as I fine more information.
