robvulcan Posted November 29, 2018 Share Posted November 29, 2018 I figured as I had the week off I’d have a look at this Matchbox Kit I had on the stash. I thought it would make a good companion to my recent Dakota. Im not looking to do a great deal with it other than make and paint it for some fun and build OOB. However I’m not sure I want to attempt D-Day markings again and I’m not confident in the Decals. So I’m wondering if Olive Drab aircraft had the same markings before the stripes where applied. Looks like that might be the case but I’m no P-47 Bod. (Help on this welcome) The inspiring Box art: I started prepping and priming the parts. Before long it’s togehrer there is not a lot to this beautiful like kit and the fit is pretty good. I’m assuming that the P-47s in olive drab prior to D-Day would have carried the same markings (Dangerous to assume I hear !,) maybe I’ll just do it with the stripes and not chicken out. Never again, but fun, especially around the outlets..... I would say spray the stripes on but not to heavily to allow for the olive drab to show through. Just an idea Rob. That’s a good idea. Having just done them on my Dakota I’m not exactly feeling excited to do the same again. It we will see. The second and third P-47's in this picture were the aircraft used during the filming for Band of Brothers. The film company called me via the Large Model Association looking for P-47 models. Apparently Steven Spielberg prefers models to CGI if he can't use the fullsize. A day was spent filming at North Weald, flying circuits and diving at the cameras. P-47N from 1999 and a few years later in a new scheme. and finally my B-17G-BO-1 "Hang The Expense" It was test flown in silver before final details and finishing. Those models are something else ! ive been going around this with Mr Surfacer 500 and Halfords Filler primer. Not so sure on P-47 markings but I know they operated out of Wattisham and Hadleigh - both just down the road from me. Is yours going with kit decals Rob? What unit are they? The Matchbox kit is 404th Fighter Group, 9th Air Force. My first P-47D was in 78th FG colours from Duxford. It changed to 353rd FG at Raydon with a yellow/black checkered cowl before becoming the 5th ERS with the red, white and blue cowl. My P-47N was in two Pacific group schemes, though I can't recall the groups of the top of my head. The B-17 was from the "Century Bombers". What unit are they? Hi Bar Side. I’m going to try and use the kit decals. However I’m opting to not do the D-Day markings and basing this of a bird of the same markings with exception of the stripes. I have no idea if this is right but I’m assuming from these photos it is likely. Olive Drab and grey with a white cowling and white stripes on the tail wings and fin. everything else looks the same to my eye. That will do with me then. This build is a bit of an experiment anyways. My first time pre shading. Possibly awful. So I’ve mixed my own approximation of Mr Color 23 ww2 Raf green with a dash of tar black and spot of H330 Raf post war green and it will do.
