3D design and printed collection of British prototypes and proposed designs

Recommended Posts

Huzzah! I’ve managed to get hold of a more up to date computer and have returned to this project. Reminding myself how the software works by having a crack at @Space Ranger‘s XP-92 suggestion

Basic outlines look ok so a few details to do and then figure out a sensible way of laying out parts to 3D print

Some detail added to the innards (not that you'll ever be able to see but I know it is there)

add some virtual decals and we might be getting somewhere

48414266546_d8f27a8f61_b.jpg

Broken into a couple of parts and a first go at printing off at 1/72 scale

Removed from print bed - the cockpit needs a bit of work but it lools like with a bit of sanding, glueing and the usual shenanigans this might actually look like a plane (or at least as much as the original ever did)

Very nice. As I said I've forsworn 3D printing for my modelling,, I think I find all the carving/sanding/fabrication bits therapeutic,   but there is still quite a bit of model engineering and finishing to get the end result, It does look like its going to take a lot of sanding to get rid of the "corduroy effect"

v2.0

Some refinement to shape and trying a bit of a better breakdown to make the innards more accessible. Leaving the cockpit as a filled solid as don’t want to deal with vac forming yet

That looks fantastic! Might I suggest making an additional cockpit area as separate parts and slightly undersized? Those parts could then be used as a die for vacform molding for those of us with vacforming devices.

Good thinking! The PLA is deposited at 185oC so should be ok for using with styrene at 105oC for forming. How much undersized do you think would be best?

Not a lot. Probably by no more than 0.020 inch/0.5 mm all around.

Very interesting thread but way ahead of my abilities once you started talking CAD programmes and 3D printing. Great subject matter thought, I have the book too and it is thumbed often, for me the Saro P187 looks awesome and would be a big kit in 1/72.

Still a steep learning curve for me as well but that’s half the fun of model making - always a new trick to learn

Am toying with what to turn to next. Have a revised 1/72 version of the RAE engines in the fuselage sketch in progress...

After that my eye was on the Armstrong Whitworth

Meanwhile on the XP-92 I’ve made a start to cleaning out the support and outline of the outer fuselage

48498662336_bf41a0d792_b.jpg

and done a bit of trimming and sandwiching together of the top and bottom sections of the inner fuselage (which looks pleasingly Buck Rogersesque)

Still cleaning up the XP-92 but sat down this afternoon to try and make some progress on the RAE draft with engines in fuselage

The drawing is so draft there isn’t much more to add. Even the cockpit had to be guesswork so I think I’ll print this off as is and just embellish/detail in the build

The XP-92 has had the internal rough edges removed

After a first layer of primer and a test fit we have...

And after a bit of painting the inner fuselage and innards it is time for some glue

Progress - still needs flying surfaces scribed in (but this will probably be as far as I take it for now as the decal spares folder has failed to come up with stars and bars or suitable numbers)

You can make out the layers in pictures but not so visible in real life so hopefully after clearcoats and decals that would further improve

More parts - a first go at making the RAE design with engines in the fuselage

It seems a pretty big beast - I'll be interested to see how it looks when assembled and sat next to a Lightning and Hunter for comparison

Been tied up with some other stuff but...

Managed to get the wheel bays and cockpit void sorted for @Space Ranger‘s XP-92 so that is printing now

48687531481_6f4a3765fa_b.jpg

V2.0 of the Miles M.52 looks better so I’ve printed off parts for one of those.

As it was on the print bed

48687704392_e94545250a_b.jpg

And with parts freed from the adhesion layer

48687190863_249205f9ef_b.jpg

Have some commissions to model and try out before I can do much more on the planes

The revised XP-92

48694887568_3466bbbe71_b.jpg

It won’t be me making this one but looks like the cockpit and wheel wells have worked nicely. Hopefully it survives shipping off to Texas and looking forward to seeing what comes of it.

That really looks impressive! Can't wait to fondle it.

this one is full of plans and lots of info,  interesting seeing what actually got built as well!

does turn up cheaper too,  IIRC the price when originally published (printed inside)  was expensive

cheers

Got it for £15 (plus about £3 postage) although described as in acceptable condition the cover and hardcover look like someone has dropped a brick on them. Contents are fine and it is readable so rather than the rigmarole of sending it back I'll hang on to it. I got the Fighter and Bomber project books by Tony Buttler at the same time so have lots and lots of grist for the mill.
