Gunsmoke 1983 - 50TFW

Old Viper Tester

Recommended Posts

Images of the 50th Tac Fighter Wing team at the Gunsmoke air-to-ground weapons competition at Nellis AFB, October 1983. Some will remember that these markings were in Hasegawa's first issue of their long running F-16A kit in 1/72nd scale.

What is that on the left pylon? A gun pod or something?

It's a SUU-20 practice bomb dispenser. Can carry six practice bombs in two rows of three, and four practice rockets, two on each side - hence the large holes in front and back. Though when I was flying, almost all of the SUU-20s I saw were marked as not rocket capable. Seen them in Light Ghost Grey, white (most often), and dark green. you can get them in both 1/72 and 1/48 Hasegawa weapons sets. I think OzMods makes a SUU-20 in 1/72 as well.
