John R
Just getting started on a Whirlykits 525 vacform and the questions start... According to the kit there are two colour schemes cream and RN Dark grey/Sky. According to Barrie Hygate it first appeared in natural metal. There is also a choice of fin shapes as the fin was enlarged to improve directional stability. So...did it fly when in natural metal? Was it given the cream colour scheme before or after the fin enlargement? John
BritJet
Definitely three colour schemes and it did fly in the natural metal scheme with the narrow fin - first flight 27 April 1954. I've not seen any photos of it in the cream scheme with the narrow fin so presumably it was painted after the mods - appeared at Farnborough Sept 1954. Not many photos of it in the EDSG/Sky scheme - 1955 and crashed in this scheme 5 July 1955 Hope this helps. Steve
John R
Just what I wanted to know - Thank you. A rather daunting number of shades of natural metal - and that's just the fuselage. I think that I might go for cream/big fin version. John
BritJet
Glad to hear they were useful. I went with the cream for mine for exactly the same reason! Steve
