Don't buy new studio lighting bulbs before checking...

... that the dark bulb has actually blown! Turns out that the spiral fluorescent bulbs in my set up, with screw-type base fittings, are able to mysteriously unwind themselves to the point when they are no longer connected. I don't know if it's to do with expanding and contracting with heat, or vibration as I move the lighting heads around, but whatever, I just saved myself a good few quid on replacements for two perfectly healthy bulbs!
