Re-boxing other people's products is little more than a cash cow,

How is that bad for Airfix exactly? It's not even bad for the modelling community if the profits get plowed into genuine new tools.

Absolutely zero.

I concur.... 1/35 is I think a suck it and see exercise. If it goes well (which I hope it does) then I’m not sure if I was going to invest in R+D and tooling any of those would be my first choice.

Airfix need to learn the ropes in 1/35...

I don't see a problem with Airfix doing 1/35 scale from another manufacturer. In the late 1970's the released both 1/32 and 1/35 MV's.  I built the Grant(1/32), Bedford QL gun portee and thier Dodge 1/35 MV kits- which I believe were by a company called Montex- all of which were marketed by Italeri.

All the big names have done it over the 45 years I have been building kits.  For me the only concern is that if they are from the Acadamy range, will the prices on par?

I can't help smiling at the marketing specialists appearing on this thread spouting off plucked sales figures to support their pronouncement of the death of various scales.  From my viewing point the other side of the world there definitely is still a market for 1:76 especially to railway modellers.  I don't recall seeing any OO scale layout that is not populated by Airfix vehicle kits.

Not a marketing specialist just a realist.

Looking at the relative offerings, excluding aircraft, from Airfix & Oxford die-cast: Airfix offer approx 20 products suitable for use alongside OO/HO railways, Oxford approx 2250. The real marketing specialists are putting their money where the future is. The voices within railway modelling forums also indicate what's currently fashion on layout and where the future for 1/76 vehicles sits.

However this amounts to thread drift so I'll be saying no more about OO/HO offerings.

Hope that Airfix do make a successful toe dip into 1:35 military market so much so that they consider new tools of oft overlooked British equipment.

Looking at information from Airfix the prices look to be similar to Hannants’ listings for the Academy boxings.

I don’t build much in 1/35 and when I do I look for British subjects, which means the Stuart.

I wonder if this will be a one off, or will Airfix go into 1/35 with some British subjects? If foreign manufacturers think they can make money out of a Churchill or a Valentine then why not Airfix?

I believe the Stuart has it's inaccuracies hence the price tag,and I wont hold my breath for any of the other kits.

Actually, it's not that bad a kit, it was quite well received when it was first released back in 2002, (ooh that makes me feel old), admittedly the interior is a little lacking and not strictly accurate for a British tank,  and there is some conjecture about the accuracy of the Turret, but it certainly looks like a Honey when built, and is no less accurate than the even older Tamiya kit.

Incidentally Mike reviewed the re-issued US M3A1 version kit here on Britmodeller a few years ago:

Ant if I was to go with a 1/35 Stuart it would have to be the AFV Club offering.

I agree the AFV kits are great, but they only do the later versions M3A3 (Stuart V) & M5A1 (Stuart VI), so they're OK for NWE or Italian campaign, but if you want an early Desert War one it has to be the Academy or Tamiya kit.

I'm just glad Airfix are dipping their toe in to the 1/35 arena again, I'll almost certainly pick up a Honey, but the rest don't really fit into my area of interest which is British & Commonwealth WW2 or post war British AFV's.

What chance Ferret's, Foxes & Saracens for 2020?

Not from Airix but one of the Easter European guys is looking at these. Certainly the Armoured Cars.

Yes, they are good kits, but they don't do early  M3/M3A1, just M3A3 and M5's. There are a few minor things wrong with the Academy kit such as missing rivets and wrong shape to the lightening holes in the road wheels, but if you combine the Academy kit with the running gear from the AFV kit, you can produce something quite reasonable. https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235012666-kiwi-stuart-1-in-tunisia/&tab=comments#comment-2554949

John.

Thanks for the link to your build, I don't know how I missed it before.

Hopefully if this works out for Airfix then they might  do some of the other Academy kits too, their Achilles isn't bad although again the AFV Club one has a slight edge.

Reading some reviews on some other forums, there seems to be a shape problem with the turret in the AFV kit, not sure if that is the M10 or the Achilles. I've got the Wolverine.

Certainly hope so. I do believe that Dragon have announced a 1/35th Saracen at one of the toy fairs recently.

Alvis Stalwart would be good as my Dad learned to drive one during the 60's when he was in the army.

Would love to build him a model of one.
