Steam train restoration yard

Hi all my daughter and son wanted to know what I wanted for Christmas ( they knew it would be model related)

So I thought long and hard about what to ask for, i wanted something different and I've come up with a dio which could go on for years or finish fairly quickly depending on how I feel it's going.

I lost my dad this yr and one of the things which stands out in my mind (apart from the tall ships and ive had enough of those for now) (ive got 3 stalled tall ship builds 1 unstarted and the Bismarck and KGV on the go) anyway i digress was helping him with his railway layout (which at the time was huge he even built boxes which went round the garden and back in the house, all with removable lids to deal with derailment and such.

Anyway we live near the Colne Valley Railway so I thought I would relive some of my childhood and build a railyard dio of trains in various stages of repair. I figure this to be an enthusiast who is just interested in steam so it will have rolling stock and trains from all over the world. There had a lot of 1/87 - 1/72 Steam train and rolling stock kits availiable so no loss of choice.

I'm looking forward to this, i see it as a loooooooooooong term build (with really no end result in mind) as long as I think of ideas I can just keep adding to it (who knows maybe I will even add some working trains) anyway I have bought a model to start it all off.

The first thing any steam train museum needs is a station

Last time I built a card board rail building I was in my teens, my brother was a glint in my dad's eyes and discos were the new place to be.

This contains laser cut parts, lasers were things of science fiction movies in those days.

I'm open to all ideas and recommendations of kits and buildings (keep in mind this is a side line build so no expensive kits as my main money for modelling will go for my main modelling)

There's so many opportunities for creative modelling here. With old rusting locos missing parts, chalked or painted sale/auction numbers, rotten wooden wagons and coaches as well as part stripped locos. I have some photos that may be useful reference for a storage yard of wrecks and projects. I'll dig them out shortly.

How do you weather these card models?

I have no idea 🙂  Pigments and a bit of a wash?

I like it, used to build small houses for my N train way back when. Good fun. I'd like to see what you make of this, very nice pics by the way @Army_Air_Force

Hi KP,

Good to see you back on the dioramas.

First, a bit of extra info for you....

I've made guttering and roof ridge tiles from paper, and corruagated roofs from corrugated cardboard. After construction, I soaked them all with thin CA - just touching the nozzle of the bottle to the paper/cardboard and letting them soak it up. The paper/cardboard then sets like plastic and can be painted as such, with enamels or acrylics, and weathered in the usual way with washes and dry-brushing.

How you weather your building depends on whether the details are embossed into the cardboard, or not. If they aren't embossed, there's not much point in applying washes or dry-brushing. In that case, personally, I'd use coloured pencils- picking out individual bricks with darker/lighter colours, green shading/spotting for algae/moss, etc. If using water-soluble pencils DON'T OVERWET AND DON'T PRESS TOO HARD, or you'll take the print off the cardboard.

If they are embossed, then I'd apply a coat of varnish and weather them in the usual ways with the usual products.

It really is incredibly strong for a cardboard kit and the fit of the parts is great, only bad thing is the instructions, you really have to study them they are quite confusing.

Quite small 🙂 But a joy to build, couldn't stop cutting and glueing this weekend. The kit is very well thought out, the fit is excellent and the end result surprisingly robust.

Metcalfe Models are a great way to get [back] into card modelling such a great advance on the old days of Biltezi  In those days Lasers were something used by arch-villains to do away with secret agents.

@kpnuts this is great idea for a dio' in remembrance of your father. My father built micromodels which included very small scale buildings. I inherited some unbuilt kits when he died but my eye sight and fingers were not up to the job so they were sold on a well known auction site.

Interested to hear of another BM member from "near the Colne Valley Railway". Most people think of Essex in terms of TOWIE and urban areas but go north of the A120 there are remote and pretty parts of the county and very few people! As you have fund there is some great inspiration for modelling in the area,

If you want to progress beyond Metcalf Models you could try this http://www.smartmodels.co.uk/rail12---castle-hedingham-station-building.html

With the local interest I am following this build and hopefully may be able to make supportive noises.

Hi all more progress on the station, also my brother kindly donated some of his stuff and track (any ideas on how to straighten the bent card ) he also donated my first train. I will be using this as the first fully restored train on the dio.

Looks like you have a Britannia there - tender is backwards it the mo though.  Love the Metcalfe & Superquick card kits.  The buss garage from Metcalf gives you loads of covered storage buildings.  I built the three parts end to end to make a running shed.  Looking forward to seeing to one build - I have a 1950s era layout that I built before going back to aircraft kits

There are a few about. I grew up in Colchester & frequented the north Essex area.  Haven’t been past the Colne Valley for a long time.  Sometimes get to Chappel & did think about modelling Chappel station at one time.  Ended up making an oo gauge layout of Hadleigh Road junction in Ipswich

@kpnuts thought that was an airfix Battle of Britain class loco.  Got one of those somewhere
