RNZAF P-40K *Finished*

Recommended Posts

This will be my next build:

Curtiss-P-40E-Kittyhawk-USAAF-42-10323-P

I'll be using the Sword kit:

(Wish me luck with the stripes.)

Here are the sprues:

20181111_184930

The transfers:

20181111_190138

Thanks to some advice from @LDSModeller, I won't be using the upper surface colours suggested by Sword.

I've made a start painting the interior but there won't be any photographs until I've stuck some bits together.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been (fairly) busy with this one.

Painted the cockpit, dry-brushed and washed it:

Assembled the wheelwells:

20181122_083833

(Those ejector thingies will have to go.)

Joined the fuselage halves:

and the wings:

Joined the wings to the fuselage (after inserting the cockpit bits)

Thanks for looking.

Coming along nicely Simon, you sure don’t muck around during the build process! I’ve got a couple of Sword Spits so it’ll be good to see you tackle another of this company’s products. Looks pretty good so far.

Cheers.. Dave

Thanks Dave. It's the usual older Sword fare. What I'd call 'high quality' limited-run: not too tricky but one needs to be careful.

...and you're off and running flat-out I see, no messing around here.

Hopefully that wing don't put up too much of a fight.

Thanks Rich. The wing gave in with barely a whimper.

A bit of progress, I've given the undersides a first coat of Colourcoats Sky. I've left the wheelwells because I'm going to make the canvas liners.

(I will fill those gaps.)

Thanks for looking.

First coat of NZ Sea Blue Grey on.

2018-11-29_05-33-18

(In the absence of NZ Sea Blue Grey from Humbrol's - on anyone else's for that matter - catalogue, I'm using Humbrol PRU Blue.)

Thanks for looking.

A few touch-ups are required and it's not prefect but I'm happy with it.

That looks good, especially as you hand painted it. I can never get good results like that

even with tape, hand painting

Not far to go now and your done

(mine is lagging a bit, canopy framing is causing some frustration:hmmm:)

Thanks for sharing

Regards

Nice colours you’ve used there Simon, she’s really looking good with the additional white stripes, such an iconic identification feature that was. I’m starting to get quite tempted to do a kiwi P-40, however I have so many Aussie Kitty’s to build it would be a shame to not use a fair portion of my many decals.

I’m sure you’ll finish her off before I do mine.

Cheers.. Dave

Thanks Alan. The stripes aren't as good as I'd like them but they'll do.

I have the canopy framing to do... joy.

Thanks Dave. She is nearly done - as the photograph below will show - and don't get distracted, crack on with the Aussie P-40s (which are looking good, by the way).

All the transfers are on.*

nearly there, she looks great in the scheme

Thanks and she's even more nearly there now. Only the wheels and drop-tank to attach, the matt coat and weathering to do:
