KonaDawg
After 24 hours of curing in a dry place 😏. Guess I'll stick with Tamiya in future.
KonaDawg
Just repaired the black and this happened. Sick of Vallejo airbrush paints, they are hopeless. 1
colin
Only thing I use Vallejo for is small brush painting, touch it with anything that has a sticky side and that happens. Did you prime the model first as it looks like its down to bare plastic
KonaDawg
Hey Collin, Yeah, I primed it with Vallejo black primer then masked the black areas and sprayed the alu 😊. Yeah, they are fine for painting details and minis.
Giorgio N
Very strange, I've used Vallejo's black primer several times and found it very tough. I also used it on a model built for a GB here that being in natural metal required a lot of handling and masking to paint the various panels and never had problems with the primer Wonder if the plastic on your model had traces of mould release agent or similar that prevented the primer from gripping ?

Yet many people get on very well with them despite their (deserved) reputation for being delicate. Perhaps it's something you're doing that's causing the problem?
KonaDawg
It's possible...... I did add a few drops of Vallejo thinner to the primer and paint to help it flow better. I did give the parts a quick scrub in soapy water, dried them off and then painted a few weeks later. Guess it must have been something I missed or this batch of black primer was faulty.... I'll stick to Tamiya gloss black and see how that goes. No dramas 😁
Corsairfoxfouruncle
I always use a clear coat on vallejo paints before i mask. Solves that issue about 99% of the time.
KonaDawg
Will try that next time. Thanks for the tip 😊
John Masters
My issues with Vallejo and Vallejo Air have always been my fault. Other than that, no problems. Sorry you had bad luck!
KonaDawg
Not to worry 😊. Not built too many aircraft and really just working on technique with this one. The aluminium seems pretty robust. Just the primer that didn't go to plan.

I think there must have been some contamination as you suggest. I masked the wing walkways and they are undamaged. Ah well, will struggle on 😊. Thanks for your comments all. KonaDawg
Hello all, Managed to find time to do a bit more work on this. Just really messing about with some techniques but it's been a fun build. Used Vallejo metal varnish which looks not too bad but it's still a bit sticky after 3 weeks 😊. Thanks for looking.
Vultures1
That looks great, especially given the challenges you experienced with the primer!
Unfinished project
I had the same issues of lifting paint after masking but that was mainly down to not prepping the surface properly. Now I always spray the entire model and my hands with 99.9% alcohol. Then a wipe down with kitchen roll before priming
Canso65
Your model is looking great! I've had great results with Vallejo paints as well. It's to bad you had such a tough time with yours.
Tempestwulf
This may not be of much respite, but I had the same problem but with Mr Surfacer. Must've been the thinner I was using. Glad you managed to fix it up.
KonaDawg
Thanks for the comments all. Yeah, I think there must have been some contamination. Rest of the paint and primer remained in place. Got some alclad to try for the next project.. Cheers!
Ratch
I had problems like that when I first started using Vallejo paints. I think the problem was that I hadn't allowed the paint to cure properly before putting down masking tape and consequently it lifted the paint when it was removed. Now I routinely allow the paint 24 hours to cure before masking and have not experienced the same effect.
KonaDawg
Cheers Ratch. Yeah, think it was definitely something I did and increasingly leaning toward poor surface prep as the cause.
Steve Noble
Did you scuff up the plastic before applying the primer at all? I always use a sanding stick to abrade the surface of the plastic prior to priming. It seems to promote good adhesion of the primer layers..
KonaDawg
Hi Steve, I didn't as I've never needed to previously but it could be what this particular primer needs.
