Marco
Hi everyone! I´m building the EMHAR Whippet kit. I´ve completed the build and basic paintwork and I'm going to start on the weathering now. I haven´t built a tank since 2012 or so and now I see there are dozens of new weathering techniques. I know there are all these fancy new products around but, for now, I'll use stuff from my stash applying the techniques shown on MIG and AK videos. The kit is very basic... but so was the real thing. It builds up very nicely. This is the only spot I needed putty: Everything primed with Gunze Black Primer:
Marco
I used the hairspray chipping method. First I added some spots of rust colour (Gunze Cocoa). Sealed this up with car-paint varnish (very resistant and dries quickly). Then I painted the kit with a three-colour modulation (that´s new stuff for me). Khaki was the overall colour; H-52 Olive Drab for the lower shady areas; and H-79 for sunlit top areas. I showed the painting to wife explaining about how sunlight alters the colours and so on.... and she asked me: "What if it's at night?" ... I told her to bugger off. 3
Marco
I wanted some light chipping on the tank. I moistened the surface and used a hard brush for some areas and a needle and 250-grit sand paper for the scratches. Hard brush here: Needle round the latch: Sand paper for these scratches:
Marco
On the bottom part of the tank I tried heavy chipping just for curiosity. I really liked the way the brown an black paint showed up.
Marco
This is the current state of the work: Everything sealed up in gloss coat (the same car paint type). I´ll get the decals on and start weathering. I painted the red/white bands because I didn´t think the decals would go well over the big rivets. I´ll add some scratches to the red bands too.
Marco
Decals on! I just need to seal them with more gloss varnish.

Marco
Hi. I tried out the streaking grime method using enamel paint I had at home. The Ammo Mig products are really cool but incredibly expensive down here. As they are basically made with diluted enamels I decided to try streaking with ordinary paints. I guess you can use Humbrol paints the same way. (The No Man's Land base isn't ready yet and the tank is only there for testing.) I want to add some darker streaks, a dark wash and dusty pigments.
Marco
Never-ending weathering. Now i put on burnt umber oil to try to add contrast to the previous streaking.
Kris B
I know it is basic kit, but maybe you can think about changing the tracks. If not for metal maybe someone selling Meng/ Takom ones. It is nice looking model and I think is worth it.

There will be so much mud involved (see next posts) that I will just leave the original tracks 🙂.
Marco
Here is how I painted the tracks. First Dark Earth letting the black primer show through. A Van Dyck Brown wash: And finally dry brushed with Gunze Tire Black.
Marco
I got the mud down on the tank. But now the light dust on the top looks too white. I'm thinking on putting some darkish wash on the light dust to blend it in. Would that work? On the rear part I added a second colour of dust. I think it looks better than the first picture but still needs blending. More muddy pictures:
FrancisGL
He has become really "dirty", very well achieved weathering, very real and convincing for my taste. Cheers mate 👍
Hamden
That looks really good - typical western front scene! Roger

Kris B
I know what you meant. Mud and dirt looking very realistic.
