Black Knight
Vickers Vimy IV, 502 (Ulster) Squadron, RAF Aldergrove, Co. Antrim, circa 1928 - 29 Converted from the Frog Trans-Atlantic 'Trail Blazers' Alcock & Brown kit Not a show winner by any means, but not too bad from 6ft 40
cngaero
It's great to see the old Frog /Novo kits getting some TLC. You've done fantastic job with the old Vimy.
bristol boy
Looks good to me even from 2 feet! I have the same Trail Blazers kit so it's great to see one build, how much conversion work is necessary? Neil

The hump needs to be shortened, the rear fuselage side windows moved forwards, the rear gunner position also moves forward. A gun position made in the bottom of the fuselage. The engine pods have recesses which need filled out level, this in turn affects the 4 struts which fit to their corners. A bay window needs to be made in the nose of the fuselage; on my subject it had only the one square window but others had three vertical windows. And if you want, some detailing in the cockpit and gunners positions. I replaced the large kit bombs with smaller resin ones 2

WildeSau75
Wow - what a cool build of a famous plane. The Alcock and Brown flight fascinated me in my youth - your build brings back memories. Especially like the rigging. tonyot
Now that is a thing of beauty,.... and nice to see it in 502 Sqn markings too,......... you should feel very proud of that mate. I`m very biased towards the unit badge as it was also the insignia of the best unit that I served with too,..... 244 Sig. Sqn. (Air Support),....AKA `The Red Hand Gang'! We used to wear the Red Hand on the doors of our vehicles, cut out from RAF High Viz Orange stick on plastic! pheonix
That looks really good to me Fred. Great to see one in post war markings too. 5 hours ago, bristol boy said: Looks good to me even from 2 feet! Neil Neil, if you want a copy of an article on how to convert the old Frog kit I can supply one which I wrote for PAM News many aeons ago. There is also a copy of the same article (minus the drawings) on Modelling Madness. You also need to change the nosewheel to a skid - Fred forgot to mention that. Meatbox8
Looks terrific. I shall take note of your tips for conversion to a bomber as that is what I would like to do with my kit.

72modeler
That is one awesome lumber yard! I really like everything about your model. What is it about the old Frog kits that so many modelers take them off of the shelf and with some loving care, aftermarket bits, and scratchbuilding, a state of the art model emerges? Is it any wonder why so many of us can't seem to part with our Frog kits? You, sir, are a real model builder! Rabbit Leader
That's just awesome BK. T'would have been nice to save this one for the Frog GB, however I'm sure you'll tag along with something else just as exotic. I'm extremely impressed by this Vimy, who hasn't had one of these kits in the past - and rightfully cocked it up?? (yep, my hand is up there!). Cheers and very well modelled... My issue of the kit was the later Vimy Bomber one so it has the skid in the kit, not a nosewheel, so I did not have to change it. But I did shave the edges of the skid down to more of an aerofoil shape 4 hours ago, Rabbit Leader said: . . . JOCKNEY
Lovely job BK Do you mind if I ask what you used to paint the props and struts, they look the business. Cheers Pat
Black Knight
The base kit plastic is a dark green. On the struts I used Humbrol gloss 9 tan brown enamel. It went on a bit streaky and thin in places so I just left it as it was. The props were painted Humbrol gloss 10 Service Brown enamel, then whilst the enamel was still wet I used a very thin brush, about 000 size, to put lines of Humbrol 9 acrylic. The acrylic doesn't mix with the wet enamel so remains streaky
