Bogue/Attacker colour profiles

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My son is about to start building the Tamiya Bogue class aircraft carrier and is looking for colour profiles of ships in the Bogue/Attacker class other than those available in the kit. Any help with paint colours to use (has easy access to Tamiya, Gunze, Vallejo and Revell acrylic paints) would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Craig.

I advise you to look on two naval websites, Steel Navy and Model Warships for reference to CVEs.

Thanks Graham, he has looked at both those sites and could not find the information he is after.

There's this book. It includes profiles (both sides, in most cases) of Attacker, Battler, Chaser, Stalker, Tracker, Fencer, Striker, Hunter, Searcher, Ravager and Pursuer. G10 (dark grey), B30 (mid grey) and B55 (not actually named in the chart at the front but it looks like another grey to my dodgy colour perception) feature in a couple of them. You probably won't want to pay the price being asked here but no doubt other sources are available, and there's always inter-library loan. ISBN is 978 1 84832 253 0.

I could not recommend anything by that author, as there are fundamental clashes between his ideas of what the colours were and what the Royal Navy thought they were.

For example, B30 was blue. The B stood for Blue and 30 stood for 30% Light Reflectance Value. That was as-opposed to Gxx where G stood for Grey.

If the author's understanding of the colours themselves is flawed, severe doubt must be cast over all of the schemes therein.

Despite shelled out full price for all 3 volumes, I can't recommend them either.  I forgot the wise maxim, "never trust a profile without a photo"!

And I have the Pilawskii book as well.  ☹️

Which boxing of this kit do you have?  I suspect from the title that you have the USS Bogue, which will come with one or more of the USN Measures, as they were called.  If you can fribnd the original boxing of HMS Tracker, this gives an RN design. although you may still have problems with the misunderstandings over just what the colours were.  You may be able to find a picture of the box art, or someone could perhaps send you a copy of the instructions.

You could also try to get this book https://www.amazon.co.uk/Escort-Carriers-Action-Warships-No/dp/0897473566/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1540934464&sr=8-1&keywords=Squadron+Signal+Escort+carriers  It should provide you with a number of options.

Thanks for the replies guys, and thanks for stopping the purchase of a book which seems to be flawed, and yes I bought the Pilawski book too.

@Graham Boak, he has the USS Bogue boxing. The book you give a link to looks promising, I will get him to have a look into it, thanks for helping.

There are rather crude camouflage pattern drawings (both sides) for the following Attacker class carriers in Alan Raven's Warship Perspectives Camouflage Volume Three: Royal Navy 1943-1944 (WR Press Inc, New York, 2001):

Striker 1944 (G10, B30, B55)

Attacker 1944 (G10, B30, White)

Pursuer 1944 (G10, B55)

Ravager 1944 (G10, B30, G45, White)

Hunter 1944 (MS1, MS3, White)

The numbers relate to RN paint shades available from Sovereign Hobbies: I wouldn't trust anyone else's.  Views on the idents of the colours may have moved on a bit since the book appeared in 2001.  In particular the use of MS1 and MS3 on Hunter in 1944 seems anachronistic.

A good source of photos of RN CVEs is, spookily enough, David Hobbs' Royal Navy Escort Carriers (Maritime Books, 2003).  Usually at least one photo of each carrier and you may get lucky and find photos of both sides.

I also recommend going to the Imperial War Museum photo archive site. There are many images of RN escort carriers there, varying from OK to quite spectacular.
