Paints for Revell Spitfire MKII

Hi

Could anyone advise on which Tamiya paints would be best suited for this model?

I have a fair few Tamiya and Vallejo colors, no RAF colors though- I do have XF64 Red Brown and XF65 Field grey- which may be of use-  i don't really want to have to buy a ton of new paints ...

Many Thanks

The basic camouflague scheme for that Spitfire is Dark Green and  Ocean Grey uppersurfaces with Medium Sea Grey undersides.

Tamiya XF-81, XF-82 and XF-83 are the 3 colours you want

Ocean Grey https://www.wonderlandmodels.com/products/tamiya-mini-xf-82-raf-ocean-grey-2/

On full size Spitfires, the camouflage scheme was painted on using large rubber mats as masks. These give a fairly hard edge to the demarcation between the Dk Green and Ocean Grey. You don't say whether you are using an airbrush or brush painting, but you can achieve the hard demarcation line required using a brush freehand - if you have a steady hand. If not then you may want to mask the pattern when you paint the second colour (I always paint the grey first then overpaint with green).  I would certainly mask the pattern off if using an airbrush as even the tightest spray pattern will give an unrealistic feathered edge.

hi

sorry yes, this will be using an airbrush - so when you say Mask-   would this be the printable templates i have seen online?

There are a number of methods of masking. One of my favourites is to roll Blu-Tac into very thin sausages and lay it out on the outlines of the camo pattern. You can also use very thin strips of masking tape in the same way. You could also use the printed templates you mentioned stuck down with Blu-Tac or double-sided tape. One thing I would not do is use a liquid masking agent, especially for the edges of the pattern; this method has always given me unrealistic paint demarcation lines.

Yes, you can use the printable templates for a Spitfire in the “A” pattern. By the time they wore this scheme all were likely in the “a” pattern unless you have a photo showing otherwise.

Don't forget the Sky band and spinner, XF-21. It’s a bit too green and too dark for my tastes, I usually add a bit of Sky Grey to both lighten it up and tone down the green. White can do the same but it’s subtly different. Try both and decide which you prefer.
