Mountfleet Models - Steam Trawler 1/32 - by Kevin

Recommended Posts

Good evening everyone

some of you know i was building a cold war destroyer HMS Fife in 1/72 scale, but i was approached and ask if i would be interested in parting with her, which after a couple of months i sold her on, with the funds from that i have put them towards my next build

before i do that i must complete or show willing to the wife that i will complete  HMS Victory, which has been on and off the work bench for 7 years now

so i have started this thread to use as a testing ground for ideas and research

the new build is 1/32 scale - 66 inches long, made by a UK company Mountfllet models

BUT there is more (more i hear you say)

yes i will be opening up one side and displaying here as a static cutaway

here is my first picture of the kit, which will be ordered after the Warwick show which i believe to be early next month

Good evening  everyone

well until i have a weeks holiday, when i will have the opportunity to build the dock diorama to finish the Victory, i was left with the decision of what to do next, and for the same reasons i will delay the start of the Amerigo Vepucci (the mess)

so yesterday i made a start on the trawler

Grimsby UK has a museum dedicated to the builders of all hulls made by the company, and they reckon they will have some plans available for me this summer, so that i can sort out the internal details, but that leaves me plenty to do

Wheel house

LOL i cut out the the bridge window panel (took hours and then snapped it in 1/2 as i tried to fit it so made another in plastic card

Good evening everyone

i put quite a bit of thought into the bridge roof last night and eventually fell asleep with no solution, then whilst walking the dog came up with this, now i have a way ahead (small steps) other than that today has been spent on the hull with the bilge keels, will cover that this week

so now i have a removable roof panel which will allow access after the interior is fitted out

this was then changed again and the railings left of for now

HULL
Bilge keel and foredec
k

several options to fit this i went for the drastic one and drilled the hull with a 2mm bit the length required and pushed the over sized keel into position, set it with 2 part epoxy and when set took it down the the correct size, it is now solid as a rock

Good evening everyone

having asked a few people i have decided to change the way i post my updates for this build. i so wanted to keep it clean and tidy, but as it is quite a big build there are lots of little projects that can be progressed

Wheel house continues

to hide the wiring i am trying to put it behind panels, the three lights under the bridge are in a position of my choosing as it is being built for my wife, and thats where she wanted them

MAIN DECK

so far i have used 50m of lime strip 1x5mm and need about the same again to completed the fordeck

the hatched took me a while, as the kit just reuired them to be fixed the the lined deck, so i had to plank around them

paint used for the hatches is MIG IDF green i bought for the D9R that i never finished

Good evening everyone, a apologies to everyone for not posting more often on here

a lot has happened in 4 months, but the biggest change was over Christmas was the decision to retire, which happened at the end of January

after a few weeks i am getting into a routine that is something that im not used to having been working since the late 60's aged 11

anyway for me life is good, my self the wife and dog, are getting used to it

St Nectan

i put the Snowberry/Bluebell build to one side, and it will be completed one day,

I went back to the stern of the boat and did some work around the Cod Liver house, these are the rudder chains that run alongside the superstructure

fitting the Whale Back

this is one of those jobs where i could have done with being outside with plenty of space and another set of hands, but it was pouring with wain and on me own

lol thank god for superglue and activator/accelerator

i had earlier fitted a sheet  roughly the right shape to the underside and strip wood on the inside of the hull to double the amount of contact area   i spread ca on the white plasticard and held it against the hull and bonded it with a quick spay, 1/2 hour later all done,

the sanding down has revealed a gap at the bow, other than that im very happy with it

the funnel

i was not able to find out if these trawlers had any funnel top protection, so i decided it would have, just scratched a few bits of plastic together and mesh from a washing bag, that i used to take to sea, then sprayed black

the difference is much better. to me

Good morning everyone

to bring you up to date

lining up the Davits with a bit of weathering the reels were in position as per the plans, but as i have found on other builds they are to far aft, and have since been re-positioned

a piece of wire to stop any sagging, then covered in cling film to protect the boat, and held in place with elastic bands

IMG_5755.thumb.JPG.950844af534935cd3ba5a

instead of tissue paper i used some sail material from and old kit again held in place

IMG_5757.thumb.JPG.7812b929a6d9b8df3da8c

painted with a pva/water solution with a few creases deliberately in place

IMG_5759.thumb.JPG.0dc49f9905d1c93508121

i have used lifecolour grey paint for this (left over from the Bismarck build)

IMG_5760.thumb.JPG.ed2db69053744a821570d

after letting the paint dry overnight, i then masked around the boat to get a cutting line

after trimming the cover fell away from the hull and allowed me to remove the bands and cling film

i have cut a few tabs from the off cuts to make a few securing positions

next will be to paint it again to cover the cut line and put a different colour on the tabs, then do it all over again on the other boat
