neil5208
My build will be of Old Maid, one of the B17E's repainted in the Haywain Air Depot camouflage scheme after the attack on Pearl Harbour, I will be using the Revell B17F kit. I know that the aircraft would have had the Sperry lower turret fitted but some of the images that are available show the aircraft was retro fitted with the later F model ball turret and the kit has the earlier style nose glass with single mg mount so show be fairly accurate. I recieved the kit as a birthday present and made a start before I knew about the GB but only did a few parts before joining. neil5208
Some progress to report interior mostly sprayed, seats will be next to be made up. Start one ot the wings and followed the kit instructions before finding Tom Proberts post that the wheel wells were aluminuim rather than interior green IMGA0468 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0469 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0470 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0471 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0474 by neil Connor, on Flickr

neil5208
A bit more work on the inside, fuselage halve's have a clear coat and oil wash. Seats painted and fitted. IMGA0479 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0478 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0480 by neil Connor, on Flickr Some more detail painting on the internal panels and radio room to do next.
neil5208
Been quite busy off late but managed to get some work done on the old maid yesterday, radio room is done and start made on the 2 turrets. As you can see masked up and sprayed silver, also sprayed the inside of the clear check pieces so they will be ready to slot in soon. Bomb site fitted to bombardiers position. Revell's instructions for painting are terrible some small parts have no paint reference at all. neil5208
So, just a small update for last week. The waist gunners ammo stowage is in place, but I relocated it as Revell would have it to far away from the gun to be usable. Upper ball turret id one but I have yet to finish the lower turret. I have 3 weeks off for christmas so should be able to get alot done then. IMGA0514 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0512 by neil Connor, on Flickr This is where Revell would have the ammo box positioned. IMGA0515 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0513 by neil Connor, on Flickr The starboard side one wasn't to far off but the port side was, also don't know why they didn't have a right hand feed gun. If I had more time I would correct the short floor in the rear fusalage and mount the ammo boxes as they should be. neil5208
So the fuselage is together... just needs a bucket of filler. IMGA0516 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0517 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0518 by neil Connor, on Flickr And said filler! IMGA0519 by neil Connor, on Flickr Leave for tomorrow and start sanding. vppelt68
I also have a nose interior that bulges the fuselage of my G. I'm about to trim the interior so that it fits, in order to lessen the need for filling the seam. Anyways, nice progress! V-P
RJ-WobblyHands
Looking good ! I am still dry fitting my build and gently sanding the interior, as the Airfix kit is also very snug !
neil5208
I would have liked to try the Airfix one but as this one was a present I couldn't say no. Does the Airfix kit have the wing cooler intakes?

neil5208
A couple of sanding sessions later I have put some of the glazing in. Some further sanding need on the under side and the tail gunner position will need work and then onto wings! IMGA0521 by neil Connor, on Flickr I knocked the bomb sight off when fitting the glazing and will need to refit before the nose glass goes on IMGA0520 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0522 by neil Connor, on Flickr Just one more week at work before the Christmas break starts so I should be able to get alot done then as the end date is creeping closer. neil5208
Due to a broadband tech issue I haven't been able to upload since Saturday but it fixed today so this will be big update. Round 3 of filling covered to poorly fitting rear tail gun section and the forward lower fuselage, the tail section was particularly bad. IMGA0525 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0524 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0523 by neil Connor, on Flickr The results from this round is not bad. IMGA0531 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0532 by neil Connor, on Flickr The nose will need some further work but will be done once the front glazing is on, The tail planes are on but the elevators have not been glued as I don't know what the normal parked up position is. The bomb bay doors have been fitted and will need to be sanded flush as the fit was not good. Masking for the windows is almost done, tail gunners windows and front glazing. IMGA0533 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0527 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0526 by neil Connor, on Flickr IMGA0534 by neil Connor, on Flickr One wing is 80% done but again will require several rounds of filler before fitting Edited December 12, 2018 by neil5208
neil5208
Spray a quick silver coat, prefer silver to grey as I think it shows more defect than grey. Looks quite good with just a few issues to sort. The nose side pieces that incorporate the side windows both need filling and profiling as they don't follow very well. tomprobert
Looking good, Neil, but you’ve got the cheek glazing mixed up! You’ve got the left on the right and vice-versa. Hopefully not too late to change? Tom

Ol' Scrapiron
That will probably help the fit issue too. Odd that they are symmetrical enough to be installed reversed. Hope those can be swapped easily. I like the idea of silver primer. You're right that it reveals flaws better, and if you choose to "wear" your final coat there is silver underneath to be revealed. neil5208
Nose panesl have been refitted and seems to have been successful. Reworked the seams that needed further work, bomb bay doors have been filed just short of flush as some pictures show a less than perfect flush fit. neil5208
Assembled the second wing this morning at last. neil5208
This one only just fits in my spray booth. Sprayed a grey primer layer last night to see if any further filling is needed before the proper colours go on, some minor touch ups on wing leading edges and engine cowls. Only thing to decide is if I go for pre shading or not. MarkSH
Looking very good, What colour are you going for on the underside? you mentioned U.S. underside grey is that from a specific range? the call outs on my Kitsworld decal sheet just reference a medium grey! Cheers, Mark.
