I had wanted to build a 1/72 Atlantic since I first saw one in the 1968 Observers Book Of Aircraft.

In 2000 our model club was exhibiting at Scale Model World at Telford and I noticed that someone on the neighbouring club table was selling their unstarted Mach2 Atlantic at a price that I was willing to pay and so the contract was signed and I had acquired an Atlantic at last.

This was to be my first experience of a Mach2 kit and a frustrating one it was at times but I was determined to complete this model as at the time I had not seen a 1/72 Atlantic model built up.

I built it during 2001 and took a small number of photographs during construction with my 35 mm camera.

Basic interior compartments from plastic card and strengthening wings spars. I decided to cut open the rear crew entry hatch and detail the rear unpressurised compartment.

Model progressing well. Scratchbuilt entrance ladder.

Inspiration for this build also came from my first opportunity to see a real Atlantic close up on display at a Mildenhall air display. The photographs I took provided some good detail references.

Beautiful build there. The Atlantic is one of the prettier maritime patrol aircraft. Was there a Heller kit as well?

Hi John, Heller did two models of the Atlantic in two scales, 1/100 and 1/200 scales.

Very nice, Adey. What a lovely machine the Atlantic was. I remember seeing, and more interestingly hearing, them when Dutch machines used to fly Clacton-Ibsley over us during my school days. What a sound :).

My goodness!  That is an excellent build!

Being a Mach2 kit makes it double the accomplishment; that you can do it this well.

I thought there was a RevellGB kit of this plane, but I could be mistaken.

Anyway, your build is truly a tribute to your skill and patience.

That sound was courtesy of the R-R Tyne which I’ve had the privilege of development testing for many hours back in the late 70’s with and without a prop fitted, although the dynamometer testing wasn’t as aurally pleasing. Once heard never forgotten!

Wow! Superlativetastic, Adey.  Love all that interior detail you did and the finished product looks amazing, especially as I believe MACH 2 kits are not the easiest builds (I still haven't plucked up the courage to build my Valiant).  As always the diorama photos look the business, especially the ones where the Atlantic is turning over.  Looks like a busy NATO exercise going on at RAF Scarborough.

I always thoguht it was 'Atlantique'. Seems I was wrong.
