Difficulty with white enamel paint

Hello,

 

I am using Testors flat white enamel paint and having no luck achieving smooth homogenous brush coverage. I like Testors and white is the only paint I am having this problem with. I have tried straight, diluted, wide brush, smooth strokes, light sanding etc.  I don't want to keep adding coats. If I mix the white with another color I have no issues. The painting has been white over medium grey plastic with NO primer and white over Tamiya AS-6 olive drab from a spray can. Any thoughts?

Go to your nearest Automotive accessory chain and get some white primer in an aerosol. In the UK we have a Halfords chain, and their white paints in rattle cans are a godsend.

Use some white spray primer or the like. It will help to have an undercoat to paint over. Going over grey is difficult and will take many, many coats...

I have experienced the same with Testors whites in the last few months.  One didn't cover well, another was full of what can only be described as 'sludge' when I opened it, and I'm now on to my third bottle in as many months.

Only happens with the whites though - never had any problems with any other color

Thank You so much for the replies. It is heartening to read I am not the only one having problems with Testors white. Going forward I will always prime my whites.

My go to white spray paint is the Games Workshop / Citadel can of Skull White. It dries beautifully and I've never had a problem getting a consistent cover.
