Hi Giorgio. Sorry you had the issues with the tape lifting the paint. Apart from that, the paintwork was/is looking excellent! Hope you manage to get them fixed okay.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Kind regards,

Stix

Hi everybody;

last August I was in California for a big family holiday/vacation and, among other things, I got the chance to visit the The Flying Leathernecks museum in Miramar, right next to the Marine Corps Air Station and just outside of San Diego.

After the visit, we walked into their gift shop and my youngest daughter insisted on buying this kit, so that she and I would have built it together once home.
Was I supposed to disappoint a 9 years old cute little girl? Not really!

Giemme, did you do the 100 aircraft recognition test while there? That was fun!

Glad to hear you got that fixed Giorgio.

Saves me having to write 'You'll easily fix that Giorgio' as I was just about to!

I love that Oramask stuff and am forever in yours and Ced's debt for convincing me to shell out for a roll.

Thanks Tony, see below for the fix  Oramask really is top stuff, glad it suites you properly too

Here's WE progress report: paint lift off fixed

painting32

and all masked for the insignias and blue-white-red stripes

painting33

I first airbrushed a coat of Mission Models Insignia White, slightly thinned with water (80% paint, 20% water, roughly)

painting34

painting35

painting36

Then masked for the blue

painting37

painting38

painting39

painting40

I then airbrushed Lifecolor Mat French Blue, thinned with IPA

painting41

painting42

Some paint leaks, as you can see, and some rough edges on the tail fin

painting43

Here's another good thing about Mission Model paints: I touched up the paint leaks with undiluted paint by brush, and it self levels beautifully. Virtually impossible to see the fixing

painting44

painting45

I decided I'll take care of the rough edges once I'm done with the red parts.

For the moment it's all been Future coated and curing

Comments welcome, as ever

Magic masking Maestro!

Something satisfying about laying out markings for paint like this isn't there?

Followed by the Peel-Reveal-Squeal of seeing if it all worked of course.

How on earth did you get the masking for the blue lined up? It looks great!

Ian

Thanks Ian   Not sure what you mean though, for the lining up: the stars and bars or the other stripes?

Glad the paint lift got fixed, professional job.

Masking the 'stars 'n bars', never seen it done 'till now. Fingers crossed for the reveal.

Stuart

Cheers Stuart, thank you  Masking for stars and bars is a first for me too, so indeed 🤞🏻

Ah OK; I should have expanded a bit more on that. I'll post a picture of the whole mask (I have some spares) as soon as I can, far better than trying to explain.

This Monday UpdateTM is a cliffhanger - can't wait to see the reveal!

Is it your TM or my TM?   Thanks for the appreciation, Cookie!

No work done last night, not even pics of the way I put on stars'n'bars masks - apologies Ian @limeypilot

I should have something for tomorrow, hopefully... 🤞🏻

Very nice work Giorgio - the paint lift repairs are invisible and the touch ups impressive! :)

Great masking and airbrushing work here Giorgio. Loved that walkway marking too, a great save there.

As all above. Nice fix. Not visible anymore. Great masking. One thing I don't really like at all. Keen to see this unmasked again. Cheers

Ced, Terry and Benedikt, thank you guys!  I'm keen to complete the masking/painting/unmasking too, but there's still lots more to do... :frantic:

Ha! I think you invented the Monday UpdateTM Giorgio. I invented the 'update everyday and then none for six months'.

 Alright - it's gonna get better, no doubt Cookie

For the stars and bars

Ian

Mask alignment; what I did was to remove from the backing paper only the outer portion of the mask, and put it in place; once airbrushed the white undercoat, I laid down a thin 3M Magic tape strip on the inner portion of the mask, so that all thebits and pieces could be lifted off together, placed them on the model centering them on the outer portion already in place, and removed the part to be painted blue, to wit:

oramask1

I hope it makes sense to you.

Anyway, last night I completed the masking for the red (Italeri Flat Insignia Red) and airbrushed it on

painting46

Time for the big reveal...

painting47

Well, I did expect some touch ups, but I could have used less...

painting48

painting49

The red went down pretty well, while it appears I used a too thinned blue mix - lots of paint leaks on that

painting50

The annoying white outer edge has already gone, I swiped it away with a nail polisher.

painting51

For the red lines, I masked using Oramask cutouts, it allowed much straighter edges.

painting52

Some blue overspary here, too

painting53

I had already kept into account I should respray the blue lines to get better edges, so I think I will do all the small touch ups by brush, then remask for the blue stripes on the wing tips and tail fin.

Then it will be time for the codes and intakes ... :frantic:
