Progressing on all the detail bits before I start painting everything;

 

Upper deck ammo lockers from the flyhawk set - lots of soldering practice!

 

Got some large life rafts from shapeways - the kit supplied rafts are all small ones and the one fitted horizontally to the aft bulkhead of the after superstructure was a larger version.

The turrets and boats are for a tribal class destroyer next in the stash. Printing quality on all the parts is ace!;

 

Got some other detail bits as well - HACS modelled without the canvas covers and POM-POM directors to replace the moulding on the aft superstructure and the ones that are completely missing from the bridge wings;

  

 

4" Secondary armament replaced by Northstar parts - lovely detail - the one at the top is for the aft mount of the tribal mentioned earlier;

 

 

Main turrets are the WEM resin ones. Presumably they were built for the original WEM resin kit so the turrets just have locating pins. I cut the bottoms off the kit turret bases and used these on the resin turrets to make sure they'll line up when fitted;

 

Combination of Eduard PE and Flyhawk blast bags and barrels. The only thing left to go on are the little stanchions that connect a cable from the center of the rangefinders to the front of the turret - no idea what it's for!!

 

Added some supports from scrap brass to the underside of the UP mount on B turret and the missing side splinter shields;

 

UP launchers - again a combination of Eduard, Flyhawk and kit parts;

 

Flyhawk POP-POMs - really nice bits of kit;

 

Northstar resin winches - the moulded detail on the kit to represent the winches is very poor;

 

I made up some of the variable speed winches a while ago;

 

 

But I thought they'd look better with the business end off some spare resin winches;

 

And Northstar quad 0.5" Vickers to replace the kit parts. Lovely, but very fiddly for my size fingers. Because they're bigger than the kit parts (but they measure correct to a 1/350 drawing), they clash with the railings when installed. On the after mounts I cut down the top rail of the railing and on all four guns added a 0.5mm disc under the mounting to raise it up a bit - overall I think they look ok;

 

Few detail bits going on like paravanes;

 

She's almost ready (finally) for some paint!!

Morning all,

Fair bit of progress to report. I've been stealing odd hours here and there to progress stuff but I've fallen behind on posting pics!

 

Detail bits added;

Voicepipe pipes (if that make sense) from 0.16 SS wire to the sides of the air defence platform;

 

Breakwaters and hatches before painting and fitting over the wooden deck;

  

And the same for the boat deck;

 

And finally some colour!!

Sovereign Hobbies Colour Coats 507B - I've never used these before but wanted to try them as I want the colour to be right - they go on beautifully - thanks Jamie@Sovereign Hobbies for all the helpful tips;

 

 

And then then the decks;

 

Sub assemblies painting;

 

Boat deck and other subs masked after deck painting;

 

 

And masks removed;

 

 

Admirals cabin glazed before the boat deck goes on;

 

Added the boat deck and wooden deck;

 

Boat deck details ready to go on;

 

Winches added to the forecastle - they're so much better than the moulded 'half winches' on the kit;

 

Aft superstructure with the shapeways large Carley float and 2 aerial stays from 0.3mm brass rod, the deck's been sprayed ready for masking;

  

 

2 doors and a ladder pre-mounted to some 0.1mm plasticard, spayed and then added to the rear of the torpedo lookout, there's a ladder to add later to the deck below, looks a bit rough close up and under a bright light 🙄;

 

Bridge assemblies test fit;

 

And parts loose on the hull (couldn't resist);

 

 

 

Compass platform assembled with lower bridge and the gaps in the bridgewings filled and sprayed over;

 

And the detail of the ladders and steps on the bridgewings - quite please with how that turned out 🙂;

 

Some details (life rafts, winches  and cable reels) going onto and sub assemblies getting ready  for weathering and final assembly;

Been getting on with detail bits over the last couple of weeks, most sub assemblies are now complete. Mainly masts and boats to work on and paint and everything will be ready for weathering before final assembly.

 

Northstar searchlights, the 44" ones have an etch base with raised mounting bolts and a cruciform bit across the front - they'll be fitted after painting (see later pics);

 

Northstar bridge equipment, the kit doesn't supply anything for this;

 

Pom-Pom directors - these are ace, the 2 Marks I's (left) are completely missing from the lower bridge wings and the larger Mark II replaces the very simple kit part on the aft superstructure;

 

Open HACS - apparently the canvas covers weren't used often;

 

Pom-Pom Bandstand - the rear support columns are 1mm rod with the splinter shield supports from the Eduard set;

 

Painted with Pom-Pom fitted and ammo boxes from Plastic strip and etch to replace the surface moulded representation;

 

Aft superstructure painted with HACS, Pom-Pom director and searchlights fitted - ready for a wash and drybrushing;

 

 

Same for the aft funnel base;

 

Forward Quad vickers installed;

 

Signal bridge details

 

Boat deck details are pretty much all installed - the white 'pins' in the middle are to hold the boat deck to the main deck as it tended to bow up a bit when fitted;

 

Anchor chains and the etch hatch covers installed on the bow;

 

And the bridge equipment and Mark I directors installed - the platform at the centre front is 0.5mm plasticard with a bit of spare wooden decking;

An extraordinary build. The attention to detail is mind blowing. I'm taking my first faltering steps with PE on the 1/144 Revell Corvette. I had been struggling with the railings, so found your tip about PVA glue very useful. I don't know why I hadn't thought of it myself as, although I've just come back to plastic modelling, I've spent the last 15 years making card models and using nothing but PVA!

My aim is to move on to the Hood later in the year and although of course I won't come within a country mile of your build standard, I will be using this thread for instruction and inspiration.

Thanks David and good luck with the PE. I can't claim any credit for the PVA tip, got it from a book when I first got back into modelling, but glad it helped. Look forward to seeing your Hood on here.

Not much to report this weekend;

 

Boats, boats boats..........................I always say I won't leave em till the end, and then I always leave em till the end!

Canvas covers on these ones as she'll be on a sea base, masking tape for the open boats and tin foil for the cabin cruisers (if that's the right term?);

 

Painted up with Tamiya deck tan for the canvas - the open boats look a bit flat but I'm hoping a wash will make them look a bit used;

 

 

Mast lower section, mixture of flyhawk and Eduard with 0.3mm brass for the struts underneath the starfish and the flag gaff (again, is that the right term?), that's missing from the kit?

 

And the mast upper section. Binned the kit part and replaced with 1mm brass, with the yard at the top, again missing from the kit, from 0.5mm brass;

The flyhawk air warning radar on the top of the mast was very fiddly and got a bit 'super glued up' but hopefully it'll be ok. I added some plastic strip to either side of the base of the etch mount to make it look a bit more 3D and give the glue something to hang onto;

Tin foil! Of course; why didn’t I think of that?  I’m gradually assembling extras for a future Merit 1/350 Ark Royal, and since she will be depicted at sea (working hypothesis is turning into wind to launch the fatal Bismarck strike) I need to cover most of the boats.  I’d already ordered some North Star goodies - bridge kit, HACS, pom-pom directors - and having seen yours I’m very glad I had.
