1/350 Trumpeter HMS Hood

Recommended Posts

Time for a new project;

The 1/350 HMS Hood with some aftermarket add-ons;

Artworx wooden deck;

Flyhawk PE and Trumpeter after market set (mainly for the barrels;

Eduard PE along with Northstar secondary guns mounts, Vickers MGs, searchlights and bridge equipment and White Ensign replacement turrets;

44252308015_4e8dc0607e_h.jpg

It's going to be a long project and it's a bit hard to know where to start really - so started on the hull;

Removed the moulded degausing cable and drilled the scuttles to give a bit more depth - some where filled and replaced using various photos as references along with the hawse pipe hull openings;

Scrapped away the moulded chain and drilled the deck hawse pipe openings;

Fore deck fitted with the bow full of filler - when it's dry I'll try and drill the hawse pipes to connect hull and deck openings. Never tried it before but if it doesn't work the anchors and gratings will cover it, so worth a go;

Thanks for looking.

Cheers

Looking and appreciating! Had a Hood in the stash that I had to sell for cash, so I'll be living vicariously through you until that's rectified again.  Nice idea on drilling the haws pipes. Hope it works, cause if so I'll be keeping that in mind.

Cheers chaps, glad to have you along, although it may be a short trip;

Disaster has struck already!!

Came home from a night away with work thinking I'll drill out the hawse pipes, only to find the filler has 'melted' the bow - not sure how or why - anyone seen this before?

Really annoyed, I've been looking forward to starting this kit for ages and his happens at the start, oh well.

I guess it must be something to do with the solvent in the filler and the fact that I packed so much in to fill the bow. The plastic's gone really soft.

So to try and fix it - more filler!! I've ordered  some 5 thou plasticard to rebuild the plates when the fillers dried and sanded, have to see if she can be salvaged

The bow deck should be ok as it'll be covered by the wooden deck;

Fitted the decks to the hull so it feels like somethings been achieved;

Cheers

Eeeuurrrggghhhh! I feel your pain! Yes, the solvent in the filler (Tamiya?) has eaten it's way though the polystyrene; ask me how I know!! Great to see you've not thrown her against the wall yet and I can see that, with care and patience, she's certainly recoverable.

I had the exact same thing happen Nick - same kit, same idea, same place. I put it down to using solvent type filler. I leff it a few weeks out of annoyance as much as anything else and it did harden up again. The plastic was too soft and gooey to do anything with at first. I thought it was ruined.

Shame about the damage to the bow. A solvent based filler will have this effect but so will an epoxy filler which can generate a lot of heat when curing. Lots of thin coats is the best strategy.

Great to see you have not been put off continuing and your new method seems to be OK.

I always use milliput and i've never had an issue, looks like an easy repair and sure with it being at the beginning of your build your still fired up and will get past it pretty quick, will be watching this one as Hoods such a beautifull ship.

Thanks for all the encouraging comments, letting everything harden as Jamie suggested then we'll see.

I've had that happen but only to thin plasticard, not the thicker stuff on injected parts.  Which filler were you using?

It's Squadron Products White Putty, got Toluene in it, so maybe that's the cause.

I'll try miliput next time 👍

That not nice to see when you get to the model. Hope you get it sorted. Maybe you can use PCV stripes to reproduce the metal shapes on the hull?

I've got same model in my stash so I see now how many more adds on I need - wow.

It might have been Squadron green that I did my damage with thinking back. If not that it would have been Humbrol stuff.

Either way that solvent needs time to evaporate off. She'll be reet in the end though :)

Cheers Jamie, I'll give it a few more days and then have a go, I think you're right, she's fixable 👍

We'll have a go Kris, 5 thou plasticard arrived yesterday.

Reading the reviews of the after market stuff it looks like no one PE set covers everything although the HMS Hood Association website, which has great advice on things to be corrected does have some reviews on the various PE sets - defo worth a look mate.

Cheers

Unfortunately yes (although not to me... yet!).  As soon as I read that I thought you'd used solvent based filler.

  • 2 weeks later...

Been tinkering with bits waiting for the solvnt in the bow to go off;

Base of the bridge sub assembly;

30533660677_59200fbcd9_h.jpg

With the Eduard replacement sides;

45422126012_52012aba8f_h.jpg

Main deck sides fitted and internal walls walls up into sub assemblies for painting - lots of doors replaced;

43656439560_451565ad40_h.jpg

43656438090_6dde1c46a2_h.jpg

31599195378_a6137d3203_h.jpg

Quarterdeck screen fitted and sanded back;

43656442490_764732ef17_h.jpg

And the Eduard cover fitted, stair landings and open windows are from the flyhawk set;

30533619307_0fa75a4154_h.jpg

The thing that looks like a little wheel is supposed to represent a winch, the motor for which was on the inside of the bulkhead. They use to be further aft on the quarterdeck but were moved as the quarterdeck often flooded in heavy seas;

31599173248_7d34e6714c_h.jpg

Made up a winch from platic rod and spare PE;

30533616467_f4f695107b_h.jpg

The kit deck winches are very basic, and the replacement ones on the Eduard set alright for the 2 variable speed winches but not the electric ones which were more widely used. I've tweaked 2 of the PE ones and ordered some electric winches from North star;

30533617717_9f3d70aea4_h.jpg

I'm not sure if the 3 pipes where steam or hydraulic - any ideas?

On to the bow repair - the hawspipes actually look alright, still need a bit of cleaning up;

43656440590_c3c75cc613_h.jpg

And the bow damage is filled and sanded;

45422127122_63454beabe_h.jpg

Hull plating applied in 5 thou plasticard;

30533658527_697067f2cc_c.jpg

And sanded to blend it in;

45422094362_fe2be3e70c_h.jpg

30533621117_8642729800_h.jpg

Hopefully they'll look ok under a coat of paint!

Cheers

Good save on the bow damage, Nick.

Lots of goodies to add! This could be a long and complex build, so I'll tag along and watch (and learn) in readiness for my Tamiya Bismarck project.

Shameful to admit, but when I saw the last bow pic I was thinking "Hmm... waterline diorama with a small tug sinking just off the port bow..." After all, it would explain any buckling in the hull, wouldn't it? I know, I know... 🎩 & :coat: for me...

  • 1 month later...

Been away for a bit but made some progress on Hood.

Gave the damaged bow a coat of primer to see how the repairs look - not too bad, after a bit more sanding should be ok.

31179649527_4b6ae9e3c8_h.jpg

Cut the degausing cable down on the starboard side - the upstand above the anchors is too long, so the brass parts took long;

46068981752_9016e121c8_b.jpg

Fitted the degauing cable;

45394993134_228081ba78_c.jpg

and placed the sanded off rigols with PE ones;

46068954672_4b548e8240_k.jpg

Port side;

Aft end;

45395013724_bbee591f36_k.jpg

Whole ship;

32247665168_9b9c421f3d_k.jpg

PE anchors and the upstand cut back;

31179658447_a59b41caa4_h.jpg

Onto the bridge structure, might as well go there next!

The little bits on the side need removing;

31179653747_82aa036196_h.jpg

The voicepipes and rigols will get replaced later.

There's something not quite right about the bridge on the compass platform level.

46305697142_f576a59ec7_b.jpg

The HMS Hood association suggest that the ladder holes in the deck need moving forward and the rear deck should be be stepped up. I agree that the ladders should move and there should be a step but I think the forward portion of the deck should be lowered - as moulded, you can't walk out of the compass platform onto the bridge wings, the decks too high. So out came various scalpels etc;

Should look more like this;

46305703482_923ba64647_h.jpg

Deck removed

31417216307_df1520c638_b.jpg

New deck fitted with holes for the ladders;

44539729870_e5eee59abf_c.jpg

Compass platform sides extended, ladders fitted, and the old ladder holes filled;

32484512508_76f4ee601d_h.jpg

Steps up to the aft deck, railings and splinter shield installed. The torpedo lookout station been widened as well and has windows from PE ladder installed;

46305705842_f1d5890c77_h.jpg

The compass platform roof has had PE ladder railing windows installed as well;

46356512761_46d0dd6ffd_h.jpg

Lots of gaps to fill and tidy up but hopefully it should be better than the moulded version when finished.

Cheers
