Pardon this non-plastic interruption:

Well, I got a little inspired by this group build and decided to let it stray into my digital artwork.

Here is a first look for you Lancaster fans. It is basic shapes for the moment, but if you have seen my previous works (I know VPP has) then you can imagine how this will look by the time I am finished.

And for those that haven't seen any of my digital paintings, here are a few recent projects that may help whet your appetite!

I guess that takes a long time to produce?

Thank you.

I guess they do take some time -- the Aluminum Overcast project was two weeks of work threaded around tending to the kids that are not in school. Probably 50-60 hours of working at the computer during that time, but it was pretty special and I didn't want to cut any corners because I will be sending it to someone involved with the actual plane. I'd rather impress him with over-the-top accuracy than have him notice things missing from the art. And I think I'm getting better results with each project while streamlining some of the process.

After the Aluminum Overcast marathon, I cranked out a P-63 Kingcobra just to do a "simpler" single engine fighter in a quick 5 day span. The Lancaster is cruising along (you gotta love inline engines) even after one day -- about 6-7 hours since starting this morning.

About half of that was just blocking each major component to get the outlines and make sure things are in the proper order (prop in front of wing in front of fuselage, etc. It actually takes some work to determine the best "stack" of components.

Then I can start in rendering the section by section just like we do sub-assemblies for a model.

You can see the #2 engine and landing gear are pretty much finalized, as are the tails and far wing. The fuselage is "simplified" to see what the colors will look like together. By the time I am done, there won't be much (if any) part in the original colors. Lots of shading and tinting and highlighting and weathering and "tin canning" and... and... and... yet to do. At least this one won't have quite as many rivets as the B-17 projects have required. There'll be plenty, but those Fortresses were crazy with different sizes and some popped out while others were flush or even sunk a bit. (see below)

This is a lot closer than one would probably examine the print in a frame, but I still strive to get it all in the work to make the final giclee as nice as possible (and the local printshop makes them razor sharp with almost every bit of subtle detail rendered.) I expect the Lancaster to have about 85% of the level of detail -- I am not going to worry about the clips that secure the brake lines   🤣  -- but it should match up really nice with the Spitfire/Hurricane set. I'll probably do a Mosquito to pair up with the Lanc as a set.

If you have not yet voted in the Gallery, you better do it this evening! The Poll closes at 22:00 but I don't have a clue whether it's in my local (GMT+2 and DST) or in the official Britmodeller Timezone? Anyway, you go and makes yours bet now . V-P

I hope it is permissible that I make one last non-plastic interruption to share my finished Lancaster digital artwork.

I have not had any giclee prints made yet, but this will fit a 10x25" frame when I do get a batch made.

Very nice digital artwork and well executed, might I make a suggestion: the nearest wing and the tail are of the same intensity of colour, if you were to 'knock' back the tail a little bit it would help to suggest the large size of the aircraft. as you have with the tip of the further wing, basically add some aerial perspective; where the colour of more distant objects become lighter in tone and less saturated than nearer objects of the same colour. I feel that because of the highlight and reflected light on the wing, the tail seems to be 'closer'

Hope you don't mind me offering my thoughts.

Cheers,

Mark.

Thank you Mark.

Its funny because I do these pretty much like a model -- each section treated as a subassembly and I try to do each "better" than what is actually visible in my reference shots. End result is that all the individual sections wind up being as perfect as possible reasonable as if there was unlimited depth of field. I may go back and tone the tail details down -- I have been thinking about tweaking that lower balance arm on the tail that seems to point off at an odd direction. Of course, another alternative would be to really tighten up the reflections and details on the wing. I'll let this set a bit and look with fresh eyes before I get any prints made.

Thanks for the feedback. It's funny how the ideas and techniques for model building often apply elsewhere -- and the reverse as well.

By the way, my next project is all exposed pistons with no cowling... the cooling fins are "a bit" of effort and I've only done two cylinders out of seven. Makes those Merlins seem easy-peasy in comparison.

Crazy thing is that on the finished print the engine  is about 2 inches square in a 10x20 frame. I'll be looking for an inline (or at least an nice concealing cowl) by the time this one's done!
