Look like vortex generators, installed to fix a flow problem.  They are common on the wings of aircraft of that generation.

Spot on, Graham, and thank you.  Quite a few examples on ‘Bing’ images.  Learning something new every day.

If you're ordering a set of Authentic Airliners window decals you could enhance your model even further with a set of their vortex generators

I will be and I’ll probably get that set also.  Thanks.

Yes it will, Rob.  Almost bid on an Airfix 727 today but decided to stick with the Revell one.  What sort of treatment will you give yours?    Couple of links below might interest you.

I think it is going to be fairly similar to the Caravelle overall.

The Alitalia décor has the fuselage all white and the wings metal and grey.

After market decals??

I'm hopeless at online shopping and when I find something it's out of stock or long gone.

But I'll manage it one day.

So currently.... Spray cans, foil, and what ever I can work out with the light grey panels.

Might look for picture refs of flaps, see what it entails!

Definitely NO rows of passenger seats!

You'd have to be nuts!

Well, it's going to be interesting to see how the two kits rate in comparison.

....

I don't know the dates of their original manufacture.

I can tell you that Airfix have a reasonable suggestion of these on the tail

Of the two kits the Revell example probably has the better outline accuracy although the Airfix one isn't covered in rivets. This thread should be useful to anyone thinking of tackling the Airfix 727-200.  I'll certainly be referring to it when I eventually get my own example under way

Plenty of reference material in our BM walk around section too.

And free rein to copy and paste the material onto build threads as required.

Here, pass me the hacksaw...

Thanks, Rob, I usually check the BM walk-arounds but it completely slipped my mind to do so on the 727.  Some very good detail photos by Graeme which will be useful on my build.

Incidentally, just discovered (old travel documents) that in 2005 we flew to Boston, MA in a 757 and from Boston to Richmond, VA in an ERJ.  Remembered the flights of course but couldn’t remember the planes.  The ERJ is a new one to me, not that am that au fair with the civil stuff anyway.

And, I note that Minicraft’s 757 has taken quite a beating by various reviewers.  Minicraft’s airliner kits seem to be much of a hit or miss affair: some pretty good, some not so good.  Pity, you’d think they’d know how to get it right by now.

I popped into Halfords today for a can of Appliance White and found myself wondering about whether or not any of their silvers might be useful for NMF?  Anyone ever use any for that purpose?

Don't know what the paint boffins think of it for polished metal, Dennis.

I know it's used for doing British silver planes, like Canberra and Vampires, but they were painted with RAF High Speed Silver.

Obvs much talk about the Alclad range over gloss black from the airbrush types.

So, did you pick up a can?

Might be worth having a practice session on a junk kit ... See what you get

I did do a little F84 Thunderjet with a new pot of Humbrol 11once , and it was ok. I enhanced the lustre with pencil lead scrapings rubbed on by finger. It brought the surface to life a bit and gave a bit of depth to the paint

Well, Rob, I only bought the white today but I’ll be passing by Halfords tomorrow and I’ll have another look.  I sent off for my livery choice today and, besides the white, I’need a silver of some shade.  Basing this on a photo of a 727 in the Eastern Delivery Scheme which is white topsides and, what I assume to be, silver painted wings, etc.  At least the silver appears to be paint not polished metai.  I could be wrong about the silver paint, however, so more reasearch needed.

A striking looking scheme from vintage flyer decals.com.

Basic Halfords Aluminium is probably the best place to start.  I use either Halfords or Tamiya Aluminium to spray wing leading edges, cowling lips and the like. If you like the appearance there is no reason why you can't paint a whole model with it.

However for the best representation of natural metal on a larger area you really need a specialist metallic finish. For a long time Alclad was everybody's favourite metallic finish (well, everybody's except mine) but recently other products have come along. For what it's worth my own preference is for AK Interactive Xtreme Metal but other choices are available such as Mr Metal Color, Humbrol Metalcote and Vallejo Metal Color.  Apart from the Humbrol which is available as an aerosol, these products must be applied by airbrush.  If you're thinking of experimenting with metallic finishes there is plenty of information on Britmodeller and YouTube.

Rob Lyttle's advice to practise on a scrap model is very wise.

Thanks for the informative reply, Dave.  Just had a thought about Halford’s metallic silvers when I stopped in to pick up the white. Couldn’t help but wonder if any BM member had used any of their silver metallics.   I have an air brush and various bottles of Vallejo silvers that I’ve only used with a brush so far but will probably use one on the 727.

Halford’s primer look pretty good, also, and I was pleased to see that they do a red primer which will come in handy for the Macchi.

Yes indeed, I will certainly practice on a ‘mule’.

Cheers

I used it on my Red Arrows Hawks and it certainly does the job

Although I was working over red plastic. But also several foil panels and scratch built flaps of various colours. It covers the lot.

The choice of gloss Red top coat is eye-wateringly complicated with all the various car makes.

I picked Rover Vermilion for the Hawks after much looking at refs, and passing cars!

Wonder if you need something from the Ferrari range!?

Bought a can of Halford’s aluminium this morning and have been experimenting a little with scribing into primer and also into the appliance white and the aluminium.  The kit is now devoid of all rivets and panel lines and will need to be re-scribed else it will appear too slick.  Lightly scribing the panel lines into primer gives a good result but so does scribing into the white.   I’m using a, as you suggested, a test mule to experiment on.

I’ve just sprayed a coat of Vallejo Model Air aluminium on the mule and will see how scribing into that works out. ,

Vallejo make a Ferrari red which I will be using on the Macchi.

And, wait for it, finally got a successful bid in on an Airfix VC-10 which I am really pleased about.  One small LG flap missing, easily replicated, and the decals are probably toast, both of which the seller noted in the listing.

Now just need a 707 and that’ll do me for a while.  Could get one on eBay but it’s a good excuse to go to Telford. 👨‍✈️

So, back to the experimenting.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi Rob,

Not missing anything, just held up a bit with various projects around the old homestead.  However, the 727 is all primed and I’m almost ready to start scribing a few panel lines.  I’ll try and get photos posted, depending on available light, later today.  Off this morning at eleven o’clock to a local park to pay our respects at the Great War memorial located there.

More later.
