Caravelle Airfix 1/144

That 6” rule really puts the size of these 1/144 kits into perspective.  Necessarily quire small although a 747 probably takes up a bit of room on the shelf.  I’ve a 727 in the post and am looking forward to it’s arrival.  

 

Nice work on the flaps laps so far.

Here's a bit of a puzzle I can't find a solution to...

Having done the flap rails like this, perpendicular to the trailing edge,

it struck me as being wrong. If the flaps moved back on that axis it would clash with the fuselage side.

In a moment of doubt, I set about the port wing and did this...

This makes sense to me as a mechanism to slide the flap out between the aileron and fuselage side.

But it contradicts the drawings, the panel lines, and even what's on the Heller kit wing moulding.

but it's too oblique for me to decide whether I should be going at 90° to the t.e. or parallel to the fuselage and wing fences.

I can't find anything decisive in walkabouts etc

Does anyone know the solution to this little puzzle??

Help and insight would be greatly appreciated!

Progress with the flaps, Rob.  Optivisor at the ready it seems.  My Revell 727 arrived today.  Overall shape looks ok but panel lines and rivets a  bit overdone and slightly recessed windows.  Still, I’ll enjoy getting into the build.  

 

Have a look at the the modified flaps on this page.   Much more involved then the Caravel’s but worth a look anyway.

Brussels museum has a Caravelle (III?) suspended indoors...

I'm not kidding....

So, all views are from underneath, but do the slots in the flaps look parallel to the fuselage, or perpendicular to the t.e.?

I think I just might, Rob.  Foil, funny you should mention that as the idea has been buzzing around in my head.  However, most carriers seem to have painted their airliners all over rather than leave them a NMF.  But what do I know, I’m still an airliner newbie.   I think United airliners had a NMF but not entirely sure.  Regardless, I’ll have a little fun mulling over the options.

Okay, thanks for that, 72.

I'm not going to start hacking away under the wing roots, but I can see how a perpendicular action can work now.

 

I've gone back on the fuselage for a minute, and applied the foil on the bottom half, up to under the windows.

Pleased to report, the clear lacquer seems to be working as a protection against the metallic residue.

I am enjoying this build to the extent that I went and scored a Heller Caravelle on Evilbay!

Any way I'm still on the Airfix routine, and nerves are tense just doing this,

But I also had a look at the paint scheme...

And I looked up humbrol 40-- because they don't tell what the colour is, they just give you the f#*#&@g number....😫😠😡

 

Turns out to be gloss light grey.

 

Could be walkways, but it's showing under the wing and on the tailplanes as well.

I know that they started painting the fuselage etc later, but I'd better get some information on this.

Anti corrosion grey. The USAF did the same with later F-86’s as well before the overall silver or ADC Grey came into being.

PS - a ghost grey or dark gull grey lightened up a little work for the color. USAF Aircraft grey the color used as ADC grey might work too.

As you can see, the decal sheet has sustained a bit of weathering over the years....

And it's causing the odd snag,

I lost the F, but other than that I managed to piece the parts back together and have cleared out the window apertures.

I don't like the blue in the flag emblem though.

Also been scratching out some airbrake recesses and fitted extensions to the main wing fences,

I got the main décor on the fuselage.

There were a few moments of high drama, but they are on.

I used a little pointed burr thing to poke through the window openings and clear the decal out of the way, and filled them with PVA wood glue.

Came out satisfactory...

I'm liking the "Lorraine" script on the buffed up metal.

But those two little intake scoops on the fin proved to be a pain during the transfer application!

I would seriously consider the option of leaving them off until later.... next time...!

Yes, sorry about that.

Apart from my cheapo Android phone camera and photography skills, the shiny metal and reflections do seem to confuse the focus function a bit.

 

I've started Phase I of the missing F recovery programme...

Little bit fiddly! 3mm high.

First strip was a fraction too wide but I think this one's about right.

I used a dab of decalfix, and I'll wait some time before attempting the next bit.

The build has gone a bit slow with lack of time and other distractions, ought to pick up again soon.😎

Hi Rob,

 

You’ve probably had a look in on the link below but if not check it out.  No Caravel decals that I can see but the gallery photos are really inspirational.  BM even gets a mention in the ‘links’.

 

Not a criticism on your photography skills, incidentally,  must be difficult using a phone camera.

I've been trying to work out the right approach for doing the light grey areas on the wings and tailplanes.

It's either foil the whole wing area and then mask and paint on the metal...

Or, foil the bare metal areas and leave the grey areas as bare plastic to be painted.

 

I'm going to try the second option,

If it all goes wrong, I can always try the other option.

It's a matter of appearance.

It's got to look like this paint is on the wing surface-- not in a recess.

 

So, only one way to find out....

Hello Rob when i do foil work i paint the areas that need it first. Masking so there will be no overspray under the future foil. Then i mask off the paint so as not to get glue on it. When its done they should be even because the dry paint is about as high as the foil. Hope that makes sense ?
