Sopwith Camel

Recommended Posts

1/32 Scratch-built Sopwith Camel in mainly basswood with oak prop, walnut axle, gun barrel cooling jackets and cylinders and bamboo struts plus brass odds 'n' sods, finished with 0.1mm rigging thread.
As with my earlier Spitfire the brief from Controller, Home Forces was that it could be a wooden sculpture rather thaan a painted awar machine, so it is left just varnished.
About a month start to finish, but actually more like two solid weekends of doing with lots of gaps in between.

Not sure what's next!

Excellent. Much harder to build like this leaving the wood bare. No chance to use filler or hide sins with a judicious layer of paint. Great job. 👍

Great build log and even better result. That is a superb sculpture: I really like natural wood textures and finish.

Thanks for the feedback chaps. Yes, the bare finish leaves no hiding place, which meant several parts had to be redone.

I might have the start of a sequence here, a 1918 Camel, a 1938 Spit, so 1958... maybe a Lightning or a Hunter next 🤔

Well now, isn't that a beauty!!   Bet it was a fun build.   So, there really were Camel parts in that Spitfire scrap!   That's like me looking for Ferrari parts in a disassembled computer hard drive ... they're there, just have to find them.

You said on my D-Jag build page that you're inspired to try a car ... well, I'll return that complement because I think I might like to try something like this!   Maybe a mono-wing would be a simpler task.   Always liked Spitfires too.
