80 Squadron RAAF Kittyhawk IV *FINISHED*

As my 79 Squadron Spitfire VC reaches the painting stage it's a good time to start another kit.

I'll be attempting this one:

Using this kit:

Note that Academy have the pilot as Lt.Col Atherton, he was Wing Commander (which, I think, is an equivalent rank and would explain the error).

Here's his biography (he's the third one down):

Here are the sprues, although I need to find two more US 500lb bombs.

I've made a start with the cockpit bits so in-progress photographs will follow.

Thanks for looking.

Nice choice beard, love these Aussie P-40s.

Thanks.

welcome aboard and it's nice to see a RAAF P-40 in the build.

it's a great scheme you've chosen. I'm sure you seen this lick already, but if not...

ADF Serials P-40

Good luck with the build, I look forward to following this one.

Thanks and that website is extremely interesting.

It's raining here so plans to go out have been scrapped. On the upside, I can get some modelling done.

I've the Interior, after a coat of Humbrol 226 with details picked out with Humbrol 33 followed by a dry-brush with light grey and a Future/ Lamp Black gouache/ water mix wash. It subsequently had a coat of W&N matt varnish before I glued the halves together.

The cockpit had the same treatment as the sidewalls:

while the glue set on the wings...

Then the cockpit bits were inserted from below And the wings glued to the fueslage:

The fit of the cockpit assembly into the fuselage wasn't helped by the rear decking. Luckily, I had done a dry fit (which is most unlike me).

Painting the white tail is the next step.

Thanks for looking.

Blimey that is fast work!

And nice work too, another great looking set of seatbelts.

With the weather we're having this weekend I expect it will be finished by tomorrow night!

Thanks, and it ain't going to be finished for a while yet... lots of masking to do!

gee you making quick work on her, the cockpit looks great.

Thanks.

There's being a slight delay whilst I work out what colour the uppersurfaces should be, from what I've read Olive Drab. I've gone for Humbrol 66, with the US marking painted out with Foliage Green.

Now to mask the wings, for the white leading edges.

Thanks for looking.

Good evening Simon

Very nice job but be careful with the Academy decals

Cheers

Thanks Patrice, I've experienced Academy transfers before and found they were okay if you use very hot water and lashing of Micro Sol & Set.

that paint job on the NG looks great well done.

All my references do list the other top colour as Olive Drab.

Thanks. I spent a bit of time looking into Olive Drab and my conclusion is: I have no idea if the colour I've used is correct or not. Oh well.

Anyway, I've painted the leading edges white and given it a coat of Future prior to applying the transfers:

Transfers are one (although I'm not entirely convinced by the 'B'):

Here's a photograph of the real plane:

I've got three US 500lb bombs but I'm going to have to have a think about how to fix them to the wing.

Thanks for looking.

Only the wheels, propeller and aerial mast to put on, the canopy to paint and, a matt coat to do.

Oh, and I need to come up with a way of fixing the bombs on. All suggestions gratefully accepted.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks to Patrice's plans and some creative robbing of the spares box (thank you Mr Eduard), all the bombs are on.

I'm calling this one done and will post some better photographs later.

Thanks for looking.

Thanks Mike but see below.

Well done. The only thing I would do is add some exhaust staining. They weren't the cleanest of planes.

Thanks Greg. I usually do a poster paint wash after the matt coat but had forgotten, that mistake has been corrected.
