Japanese Navy carrier aviation

Hi all.

 

I started in 2005, with the great help of Mr. David Aiken, to do color profiles of Japanese navy carrier planes.

The first topic was about planes of Pear Harbor raid. Later I started about others battles.

Now my website had hundreds of photos e color profiles about IJNAF, in particular of carrier planes, from 1914 until 1945.

 

Early times, Sempill mission, IJN Hosho, Akagi, Kaga, Ryujo, China war and many more.

Thanks, great coincidence: I was just collecting info for an A5M on board Shoho during the battle of the Coral Sea.

 

I've found several profiles that show these in a 'A6M Zero' scheme, i.e. white-grey, black cowling, double yellow tail band.

What I haven't found is any photo showing these in that scheme. All I can find are early/pre-war photos, with coloured tails.

 

The Shoho's were the last A5Ms to see combat from a carrier. How certain can we be that those did use the 'A6M2 Zero' scheme?

My site has many color profiles based in photos, color profiles and info from books.

Some of color profiles don't have photos as base, but the info come from Japanese researchers based on Japan official documents.

 

About Shoho we have only two color profiles of A5M4 (tail codes DII-109 and DII-112), three A6M2 (tail codes DII-102, DII-104 and DII-105) and three B5N2 (tail codes DII-300, DII-302 and DII-308). Look on these links:

About Claudes at Coral Sea I don't have any color profile, but maybe DII-109 and DII-112 could be there, because this carrier had 12 fighters on board, A5M4 and A6M2, and 6 bombers B5N2.

If these two Claudes were there, the only modification is remove the red tail and do the red tail codes, like this one (DI-116) from Ryujo. The info of this plane states about this changes: 

"DI-116 was flown by a wingman of IJN carrier Ryujo, during Operation “C”. 
The red tail called "hoantosho" (lit: safety paint) was adopted by the IJNAF from June 5, 1933 as a measure to make 
the aircraft easily spotted when on water during emergency landings etc. It was officially abolished around March 1942.

I'll use the 'zero-scheme' then. Interesting that the tailcodes continue between 2 types. The Shoho had 8 Zeroes and 4 Claudes, so the codes must have been from DII-101 to DII-108 and from DII-109 to DII-112, with the A6M below the A5M!
