Aoshima McLaren F1 GTR Longtail.

This kit was originally the Aoshima 1/24th Mclaren (1997 pre season testing) version, but because the colour scheme looked a bit bland I decided to change it into the Fina/Warsteiner sponsored  S.Soper/J.J. Lehto version that raced at Suzuka in ‘97. The decals are by TABU and whilst they’re pretty good the multi part blue side decals could not be made to fit in a satisfactory manner so I ended up masking off the body sides and airbrushing the scheme. This was a very painstaking exercise as both sides had to be an exact mirror image of each other and at 1/24 scale the distorted blue chequer blocks were very difficult to reproduce. The only other mods I’ve done are to add a photo etched racing harness kit, a scratch built roof aerial (the kit version was like a 1/24 scaffolding tube!), tyre valves and some scratch built wheel weights. The weights are pieces of scrap styrene covered in thin aluminium foil which was painted to simulate silver/grey gaffer tape. The racing numbers were left off the car as the TABU decals weren’t 100% the correct size and fortunately I found a photo of the real car without them so a bit of poetic license has been used. Finally, the sharp eyed will notice that there isn’t a windscreen wiper fitted. This was an oversight on my part when the photos were taken and after desperately searching through the rubbish on my modelling table it’s been found and fitted. Phew!

Anyway, here’s the finished result (sans wiper) for your welcomed criticism.

I can't see anything to criticise, that's a lovely job! Very impressive paintwork, especially the masking for those blue side chequers, that must have taken some patience!

And in all the car models I've built, I've never even thought of adding wheel weights - nice touch & an idea I'll be borrowing er, stealing in future!

Really nice McLaren!
