Here's one I didn't start earlier - Heller 1/72 P.Z.L. P 23 A/B KARAS

Hi All

Before I was diverted through a Matchbox Provost, I was headed toward this

DSCF6998.jpg

The masks were (are?) what I was delayed with (for?), but I have struggled through the grammar minefield it's now on the Slab.

Yes, it's been a little bit soggy at some point, possibly chewed on by Box Weevils too, but it's canopies area fine specimen for trying out pre-cut masks.

The instructions had me spray the interior Aluminium, however, t'Interweb proposed the interior was the body colour due to a large opening, so Polish Khaki it is

DSCF7001.jpg

Now then, Polish Khaki is quite an elusive shade to pin down with regard to production date, application, age, etc etc, so I've gone with Vallejo VA71.    ........

Too brown?

Hello!

I'm glad that you're building a model of a Polish plane.

Here's Karas 1/48 a gallery from the construction of another PZL23B model, scale 1:48 but it may be useful.

Exterior painting of the aircraft (Polish users) - Polish Wings 17, Stratus, page 88:

Upper and side surfaces:

 - ... - first half 1938 - FS20122

- 1938 - 1939 - FS30108

Lower surfaces:

- FS35450

As for the color of the interior, I've to check and answer later - there are two theories: Polish Khaki or color similar to FS35450 (but more greyish).

and so...
the interior in Polish Khaki is a good choice, with a high probability the interior looked like in this model

07.jpg

the blue/blue-gray or silver color was probably only on the early factory planes

Hi All

Thanks Adam, very useful information.

Your Karas builds are well above what I'm aiming for with mine, top jobs!

Here's where I'll probably be leaving my interior, just as Heller left it

DSCF7004.jpg

Eduard do a full etch set for this kit ED72223, perhaps I'll tackle that on another one when I see how this canopy comes out.

Anyhoo, I've managed to squeeze a couple of moments in The Lab, but all I got done was joining together the rough engine cowling

DSCF7011.jpg

The rough body join

DSCF7012.jpg

(Before and after realising I should have paid more attention to the lower seam location and attacking it with various files and sandpapers)

DSCF7059.jpg

And throwing on some primer

Hi All

Now we come to the crux of this build, the canopy masking.

They're the Montex Mini Mask set for external canopy.

DSCF7060.jpg

The small pieces don't seem to adhere particularly well to the curves, and can be moved out of position quite easily

DSCF7061.jpg

The bigger pieces on the flat surfaces are better

DSCF7062.jpg

They're made from a black plastic tape, a bit like PVC, with a glue that's slightly slimy.

DSCF7063.jpg

They stick ok  to curves once pressed down with a cocktail stick

DSCF7064.jpg

I've just noticed how skewed they've become, the pieces look like they deform while fitting, then retract.

More experimentation needed.

Good work so far!

Heller Karaś is very nice, but already obsolete kit.

If you want to build another Karaś someday, try the new IBG product, it is very nice and modern kit, and not expensive.

But of course you'll more badly need some fighter to escort you Karaś - try the Arma Hobby PZL P.11c!

Hi All

Sorry I'm late, Silly Season is in full swing and I'm contractually obliged to not disappear into The Lab  🚧

However, with the aid of Friends In Low Places, I've managed a couple of brief encounters :snorkle:

Two types of tailplane are supplied, enabling the construction of an /A or a /B

DSCF7067.jpg

I'll be making an /A from Force Aerienne Roumaine

DSCF7069.jpg

DSCF7070.jpg

The wing root join requires a fine application of your filler du jour, but nothing serious.

I'll try to sneak a primer on it somehow, but at this rate it'll soon be Christmas :raincloud:

Anyhoo, comments and suggestions welcome

Cheers

I made one of these in the eighties. It is one of the few planes I still have from that time. I have been wondering why I painted it green. Now I know after seeing your box. The plane is supposed to be a more brown/green colour but much closer to the brown. I wouldn't worry about that other kit it is 1/48 and very detailed. It is a beautiful kit and makes a good reference for you. I have it to be built one day.

Hi Greg, yes the box art is slightly misleadingly green, as both the accepted shades of Polish Khaki (early and late) are much more brown with a hint of green.

I've managed a quick squirt of that Vallejo RLM04 over white primer

DSCF7074.jpg

Slightly 'lemony'?

I'll see how it goes against the JU88 and some blue on.

Hi All

A sudden burst of inactivity allowed me to mask the yellow

DSCF7098.jpg

Squirt on some primer

DSCF7099.jpg

And flash over with some Vallejo VA 71.255 Light Blue RLM65

DSCF7101.jpg

I was going to do the gondola canopy with the upper surface colour first as it will be seen inside from the top, but opportunity won over accuracy.

Unmasking later!

Hi All

Here it is with its' wrappings off

DSCF7106.jpg

Slightly grey-ish, but still a kind of blue (and if it's good enough for Miles, it's good enough for me 🎺)

Here it is with the RLM75 JU 88

I don't think you need any suggestions, this build is rocking along very nicely as it is.

Thank-you dear, but it would appear that it should be suggested to me that I RTFM, as we shall soon see...

I got the underside all masked off and got some Quasi Polish Khaki in the cockpit

DSCF7107.jpg

Then on with the previously masked canopy

DSCF7108.jpg

And away I went

DSCF7109.jpg

The canopy is a much better fit than this, it's just popped on with Blu Tack

However, there was one piece that lifted slightly

DSCF7110.jpg

Masking off, and we have

DSCF7112.jpg

DSCF7113.jpg

DSCF7114.jpg

The yellow band looks a bit wonky, but no-one ever looks underneath a model, do they

Back to the canopy

DSCF7116.jpg

DSCF7117.jpg

DSCF7118.jpg

Not too bad, a couple of pokes with a cocktail stick should see them decent (and some of them are underneath too)

Pressing on, I got some wash and dry brush on the engine and IP

DSCF7121.jpg

DSCF7122.jpg

Most of this will also be hidden.

Right, that's everything accounted for, time to got some stickers on and put it all together

DSCF7123.jpg

NNNOOOOOOOO!!!

DSCF7125.jpg

Yes folks, I missed the part that the red, yellow, and lilac tail markings weren't decals, so it's back to the spray box for me :wall:

Comments and suggestions about looking ahead welcome

Hi All

Right, where were we?

Ah, yes, the stickers.

DSCF7128.jpg

There's quite a surplus of yellowish carrier film

DSCF7129.jpg

So it was sliced as close as I could see

DSCF7130.jpg

And haven't turned out too bad

DSCF7131.jpg

DSCF7132.jpg

They look quite sturdy, so there's a course of leeches  Daco Strong on the cards.

Meanwhile, her legs need wheels fitting

DSCF7133.jpg

Cutting along the dotted line

DSCF7134.jpg

The wheels need a touch up where I've held them, but nothing serious.

Next time I may get it all together!

Good recovery with the tail markings and decals look good too.

I thought to myself 'How is he going to get those bloody wheels with the axles already in place?' You took a wedge out of the wheels...I think?

Good progress, not far now.

Yes, just a slot

DSCF7135.jpg

I got the lights on by painting the locations on the legs in silver, then while it was still wet, placed the clear parts on and let them dry. No fogging glue!

They are oversize, but I didn't relish the prospect of sanding them down when I could hardly see them in the first place.

Anyhoo, the internals were fitted in

DSCF7136.jpg

And with the lid on some of it can still be seen.

DSCF7138.jpg

A better build would benefit from a vac-form canopy and an internal PE detail set.

I got the nose on, and the exhausts fitted without any wrangling

DSCF7141.jpg

Then before I knew it, ready for a final coat of varnish to seal it all in

DSCF7140.jpg

It might be a while, it might be soon, who knows.
