PhantomBigStu
As mentioned in the lightning thread I so want to build this, but there’s the inner doubt really is stopping me, but even if I don’t end up doing it I’m bound to enter something else so here we go. Lex77
Got one of these in the stash so looking forward seeing this one being build.
PhantomBigStu
Primed the sprues today so may well actually happen though I have an italeri supersabre on the way as the cowardly option
Col.
Do both!
PhantomBigStu
Well I’ve ordered a eduard mask so I think I’ve committed, but annoying it’s not being dispatched till Tuesday so plenty of time to assemble it

Anyway I’ve just realised I might end up doing the camo option, which makes the mask redundant (as I’ll be brush painting the camo) so maybe I’ll cancel that order. Anyway haven’t started it yet, but the box is now occupying the bench Edited September 20, 2018 by PhantomBigStu
PhantomBigStu
Oh my I’ve only gone and done it, opened it, and several hours later a painted cockpit, airfix has some strange paint suggestions, but found a build from someone who actually seen the real thing and followed his images
Col.
That makes it official then Nice start Stu.

PhantomBigStu
More progress, like the way they’ve engineered the intakes which I’ve not yet documented, made aftermarket seemless intakes irreverent as the seam lines from the multiple parts can be covered by a generous coat of paint after the fact.
PhantomBigStu
Here’s a (poor) pic of the intakes, the spiltrr plates slot very nicely into the two halves, which also have two side pieces that slot in for some reason I can’t fathom
Col.
Although I've not paid much attention to this new kit from Airfix until now it sounds to be well engineered going by your descriptions so far Stu. Makes it sound tempting
exdraken
Your are really motivated in this GB! Mzst be a monster compared to the little fighters, no? Great progress!
PhantomBigStu
No more progress today, priority is finishing the builds for the mustang and classic GBs by tonight’s deadline. Have unwrapped the supersabre that arrived yesterday but remained parcelled up. It’ll be a bare metal danish example unless I buy some aftermarket decals
PhantomBigStu
Fit issues have appeared, the rear bulkhead must be fractionally to wide, as the the fuselage has a gap, and I had to do some surgery to attach the horizontal stabilisers
PhantomBigStu
Not happy, had my first major disaster, at some point I blindly followed the instructions and cut the flap fairing, not even sure why the instructions even suggest that. That’s going to be painful to rebuild both
Col.
Uh oh. Not heard metion of this quirk in the Airfix instructions yet but then again I've not seen the new Victor kit built by anyone else yet. Hopefully not a major task to correct it. Instructions are on then airfix website, checked them again an it definitely tells you to cut them off for flap down mode, that really is a silly error. JOCKNEY
Sorry Stu Fingers crossed things aren't as bad as you fear cheers Pat
PhantomBigStu
Flaps removed and thanks to some surgery the gap has been removed, wasn’t that smooth getting the flaps off and it’ll need a bit of work before the flash white can be painted. And those nacelles will need to be remade, miliput should be suitable for the job.
PhantomBigStu
Filler on, now to prep that underside for the white.
Col.
That's a lot of filler. Not one of Airfix' best fitting kits I'm guessing?

Guessing most of that is self inflicted though I do have to shift the blame to the kit for the rear fuselage fit and the fact the horizontal stabs needed surgery to fit. Also as bad as the filler looks I applied it very liberally, was about to go out so just slapped it all on. Anyway left it to cure and will hopefully start sanding tommorow. Also started the supersabre, not posted the thread yet but I’ve recorded the progress, the fit of the gear up parts is a possible concern and may end in the build being a 1970s scheme instead
Morlock
Glad to see I am not the only one who can be intimidated by a kit and just leaves it sit there for a while! I am a bit disappointed at some of the fit issues though, I thought Airfix were finally making decent products now days.
PhantomBigStu
Decided to do the sanding but in stages, starting with the port wing, now considering actually trying out xtracrylix gloss white and brushing the underside as I do each section, rather than spraying and sanding wholesale.
